In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, In physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum. Use in gemologyIn gemology a phenomenon is an unusual optical effect displayed by a gem. From Google News Search: "phenomenon" How'd you explain the phenomenon of the "curve ball" in sports like tennis, baseball, golf or cricket? Q. In many games like cricket, golf, tennis and baseball, we notice that a spinning ball deviates from its parabolic trajectory as it moves through air. I know that this deviation can be partly explained on the basis of Bernoulli's principle, I already have text regarding this topic, I was just wondering if someone could explain the phenomenon in simpler words. Thank you very much. The "curve ball" is called "swing ball" too Asked by Abhyudaya - Mon Mar 20 19:38:33 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. it all comes down to the difference between laminar flow and turbulent flow. think about a non-spinning ball moving through the air: if the surface of the ball is perfectly smooth, then the motion of the air just near the surface (this is called the boundary layer) will be perfectly smooth too. as the air moves around the sides towards the back of the ball, the angle between the direction of the air's motion and the surface of the ball will get bigger and bigger. at some point the boundary layer won't be able to "stick" to the surface anymore and will detach. (this phenomenon is called boundary layer separation.) the faster the air is flowing, the separation point will be closer to the place at which the ball is widest. this… [cont.] Answered by nate - Tue Mar 21 20:35:52 2006 What can i create to represent ANY astronomical phenomenon? Asked by arhghrh - Mon Apr 2 13:32:41 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. How about constellations...? From Earth, they appear as forms - the Big Dipper, Virgo, Scorpio, etc - but when viewed from a different angle, the stars are very far apart - and only *appear* close together when viewed from Earth. Get a box, and cut a "view port" of how the stars look from Earth. When you look in the top, however - you see the actual positions of the stars.
