How did Chinese people in the Philippines become so successful?
Q. I've heard so much about how successful Chinese are in the Philippines. That they came from China, started from scratch, and became successful business owners. There are lots of OFW's who go back to the Philippines to start a business but most of the time their businesses usually fail. Also most Balikbayans and foreigners would be reluctant to start a business because most see it as a bad place to make an investment. So what makes Chinese people in the Philippines succeed in business where most OFW's, Balikbayans, and Foreign investors either do not succeed or are reluctant to invest?

A. You are over simplifying & may not be looking at the numbers correctly. Although you are correct, on the surface there are many successful entrepreneurs who came from China in the Philippines. But there are also many successful Filipino entrepreneurs, in the Philippines & even abroad. Anyway, here might be clues as to why you see it that way. 1. Filipinos are generally not good at being patient as they would normally want to sell at a higher markup & not go for quantity, which is the opposite of what the Chinese do as they would normally take smaller markups but would do their business in bulk. 2. The Chinese came out of Mainland China being oppressed & poor in everyway, & most of the successful ones today came to the Philippines when… [cont.]

A. University of the Philippines - that's the only recommendation you'll get from me (die hard peyups here!). SAT not required!!! But you have to pass the UPCAT (UP College Admissions Test) and your SAT is a good preparation for this. And YES, we do speak good English in the Philippines. It is our medium of instruction. Good Luck!

What is college life like in the Philippines compared to the US?
Q. I'm curious to know what college life is like in the Philippines. Is it all studying or a lot of partying? What is the dating scene, social life, fraternities, sororities, sporting events like in college in the Philippines? Do you think college is more "fun" in the US or Philippines?

A. in the philippines you can get kicked out of uni for not attending your classes or always being late to class, and not maintaining a high grade point average. in the states as long as you pass your exams and hand in your homework/projects in time, it's ok, attending classes isn't a must. schools in the phil. are much stricter than in the u.s. i think. and not all universities here have sororities/frats altho there are orgs you can join. as for sports, basketball (uaap) is big here but that's about it.

A. I honestly don't know, but I can tell you, there are numerous other choices for a dietary food you can give. Look into frogs, gut loaded crickets and grasshoppers, for larger filling meals. If you are patient, you could also get him to accept larger sized pellets too. I really don't know what to tell you about a centipede, but try out the frogs if you're looking for something larger and more filling.

Tourist in the Philippines: How do I get a wireless phone to use?
Q. Hello In the coming weeks I'll be travelling to the Philippines. I'm assuming that obtaining a cell phone is as easy as going to mall and buying one from a shop. I've never used a GSM phone before. Are they very expensive? Also, if I'm not mistaken, they come with a SIM card too, correct? Is the prepaid airtime built into the SIM or do I have to buy a separate prepaid card? Thank you I currently don't own a cell phone.

A. Have you tried to contact the Philippine embassy near your area? There is always the idea of just going to those regions and working with the red cross or local hospitals. When the situation is dire, I doubt red tape will prevent you from giving your time and skills to aid those that are in need. Although, some would really want to get a cut from you paying them for volunteer work. hehe. Well, Filipinos sure need the help right now, especially in Northern Luzon areas of Pangasinan, Baguio City, Benguet, & Mt. Province. The recent typhoons (and another one coming) did major damages to those areas.

Does Philippines usually accept pets coming from china?
Q. I am planning to take my dog to the philippines. I'm originally from Australia, worked in china for a while and fell inlove with my dog and now I want to take him to the Philippines where my father is in his retirement. I don't know though if the philippine animal bureau or customs would accept my import permit application if the pet is coming from china. I already have the paperwork and am getting them done now. But what if the papers are not enough? I mean most countries think China is the dirtiest *** hole in the world but i really love my dog.

A. It depends on how long are you going to stay working here in the Philippines. If it is just less than 6 months, then you will fall under the tax classification of Non Resident Alien not Engaged in Business and a final tax of 25% (not sure) shall be deducted in your income. But if you have intentions to stay or work for long and will have the necessary work permits, you may be classified under Non Resident Alien Engaged in Trade and Business on which your income tax will be computed just like the regular Philippine employees which uses of the graduated income tax table. The graduated income tax table rates ranges from 10% to 32% depending on which income tax bracket you will fall. Your net taxable income will also be subjected to legal… [cont.]
