Most academic subjects have a philosophy, for example the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of logic, the philosophy of law, and the philosophy of history. In addition, a range of academic subjects have emerged to deal with areas which would have historically been the subject of philosophy. These include psychology, anthropology and science.

Please explain the difference between these 3 Philosophy classes?
Q. I need to take a Philosophy class but I dont know which one to take. My options are Intro to Philosophy, Intro to Logic, and Ethics. Please explain the difference on what is covered between the 3. Which one is more interesting? I am not big on reading, but I will read if the material is interesting. Please help because I need to take this class this semester. Thanks for all the help you guys can give.

A. In philosophy you're going to do a lot of reading, period. And it tends to get very deep. Take the intro class first. I wouldn't recommend taking either of the others before taking the intro class because you need the general information in the intro class to better understand the others. After that, if you choose to take another philosophy class, I'd choose ethics over logic. Logic is almost like an advanced math class with words instead of numbers. And check professors through ratemyprofessor.com if at all possible. You definitely want a good professor for philosophy.

what is philosophy and how do i become a philosopher?
Q. I'm really confused about the concept of philosophy, is it a type of moral thing we follow by? Or is it thinking about logical problems, and how can I practise or use it?

A. I am a philosophy major. The thing about philosophy is you have to remember that history repeats itself and philosophy is the act of creating new theories around the people and events of the past and reflecting them to create new ways of thought for the future.

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

Sourced

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance." Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
