NounPlural present tenses present tense (plural present tenses)
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. There are two common types of present tenses to be found in most Indo-European languages: the present indicative (i.e., the combination of present tense and indicative mood) and the present subjunctive (i.e., the combination of present tense and subjunctive mood). Germanic LanguagesGerman present indicative tenseIn German, the present tense is used in a rather different fashion from English. The present tense is a simple construction. There is no close equivalent to the English present continuous. Here is an example of present tense conjugation in German: gehen sprechen finden laufen ich gehe spreche finde laufe du gehst sprichst findest läufst er/sie/es geht spricht findet läuft wir gehen sprechen finden laufen ihr geht sprecht findet lauft sie'(they)' gehen sprechen finden laufenRomance LanguagesThe Romance languages are derived from Latin, and in particular western Vulgate Latin. As a result, their usages and forms are similar. Latin present indicative tenseIn Latin, the present tense can be translated as being progressive or simple. Below is an example of present indicative tense conjugation in Latin. plicāre debēre dicere cupere scīre Ego plicō debeō dīcō cupiō sciō Tu plicās debēs dīcis cupis scīs Is, Ea, Id plicat debet dicit cupit scit Nos plicāmus debēmus dīcimus cupimus scīmus Vos plicātis debētis dīcitis cupitis scītis Ei, Eae, Ea plicant debent dīcunt cupiunt sciuntFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Are books written in the present tense annoying to anyone? Q. I am just trying to get people's opinion about writing styles and how enjoyable they are to read them. Present tense writing seems a little bit annoying to me because not too much is written this way, and I'm just not used to it. I've been trying to write using the present tense but would like to know other's opinions before I get too far. Asked by ScareBear - Sat Oct 7 21:54:42 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Being that we live in a society of fast readers and people who want to jump right to being involved in the story, it would appear that the more present tensely related they are, the readers seem to feel connected to the here and now. The problem that sometimes arises is confluency and consistency in the writing. The best thing to do is to write as the incident is occurring in the writer's mind so that the readers will feel just as enraptured as you were when you wrote the story. It is a better way to relate to characters. Answered by Inda Mist - Sat Oct 7 22:01:19 2006 Is it okay to be writing this in the present tense? Q. I'm doing a paper on a French novel that's summarizing the life and personal characteristics of the main character. I've written the whole thing in the present tense - "he loves his parents", "he tries to be ___", etc - but now I am wondering if I should be using the imperfect tense? It's been years since I had a grammar class so I am really not sure. Asked by chzbrgr - Thu May 7 00:13:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hello. You're using a rhetoric device called "historical present", "literary present" and even "dramatic present". This is the use of the present tense to refer to part events or to describe things/persons from a past time. As long as you stick to one tense throughout your writing, you'll do OK. Be careful not to shift tenses without any apparent reasons. Writing one sentence in the present and the next in the past will make your text less coherent than it could be, less "polished" and even more difficult to understand. You can choose the present or the past tense as long as you are consistent and use your choice throughout your text. Good luck. C. Answered by -THE- Claire - Thu May 7 01:22:52 2009 How do past and present tense work when you're describing something?
Q. When you're writing in the past tense and you want to describe someone or something, like the way they look and stuff, do you use the past, or the present tense? Say I'm writing about my friend. Would I say: She was blonde and had blue eyes. Or would I say: She is blonde and has blue eyes. ??? Please help?! Asked by eternal_damnation - Wed Jun 25 16:04:23 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Once in a tense, you stay in the tense. Never go in and out of the tense, the story will make no sense. "She was walking down the street. Her eyes were blue, her hair was blonde and the dress she wore was flowered with lilies." "She was walking down the street. Her eyes are blue, her hair is blonde and the dress she wore is flowered with lilies." I think you can tell the difference... But you could do with out the words "Was" and "Were" from the first sentence. "She was walking down the street. Her eyes blue, her hair blonde and the dress she wore was flowered with lilies."
