A prize is an award to be given to a person or a group of people to recognise and reward actions or achievements. Official prizes often involve monetary rewards as well as the fame that comes with them. Some prizes are also associated with extravagant awarding ceremonies, such as the Academy Awards.

Prizes are also given to publicize noteworthy or exemplary behaviour, and to provide incentives for improved outcomes and competitive efforts. In general, prizes are regarded in a positive light, and their winners are admired. However, many prizes, especially the more famous ones, have often caused controversy and jealousy.

Specific types of prizes include:

  • Hierarchical prizes, where the best award may be, for example, the "first prize", "grand prize", or "gold medal", and subordinate awards may be called "second prize", "third prize", etc., or "first runner-up" and "second runner-up", or "silver medal" and "bronze medal".
  • "Consolation prize": an award given to those who do not win an event but are deserving of recognition. (See also: parting gift)
  • "Booby prize": typically awarded as a joke or insult to whoever finished last. See wooden spoon (award).
  • "Purchase prize" or "acquisition prize": a monetary prize given in an art competition in exchange for the winning work.

Q. We need to raise money for our local team & were thinking of a prize draw. Do I need to register as a promoter? If so, who with?

A. No... you just need tickets (a prize or prizes) and some people to buy them. That simple.

If I donate part of a grand prize to charity, will the tax write-off cover the rest of the items won?
Q. Recently I won a $15,000 home kitchen package, though will be unable to afford the taxes the prize will accumulate. One part of the prize alone totals $10,000. If I donated that item to a charity or non-profit, would that write-off be enough to cover the taxes on the rest of the items?

A. The donation would be non-cash charitable contribution which would be reported on Schedule A - Itemized Deductions. Since the amount you indicated would be over $500, you would need to fill out form 8283 - Noncash Charitable Contributions, and since it's over $5,000 you'd also need to obtain a qualified appraisal of the property and attach that to the return as well. The other thing is that the most that you can deduct with charitable contributions is 50% of your AGI, and the rest would be carried forward for up to 5 years. So depending on your other income, you might or might not have enough in write-offs to get out of the taxes on it. And you've got to hope that the appraisal on the part of the prize that you donate would be the $10,000… [cont.]

What is an easy way to make a prize wheel?
Q. I need one for an event and the people will spin the wheel and they win the prize it lands on. I was hoping someone might have an idea how to make an easy and inexpensive one.
Asked by charmed - Thu Oct 19 22:10:42 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could make it real easy if you aren't looking for it to be seen from a long ways away. Just steal one out of a kids game that only has colors on it, then make a chart or small banner with prizes associated with the colors. Or, you could scrap the wheel idea, and maybe go with like a bingo type system with balls, assigning a number to each prize. Just a thought. Good luck.
