Professional development refers to skills and knowledge attained for both personal development and career advancement. Professional development encompasses all types of facilitated learning opportunities, ranging from college degrees to formal coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities situated in practice. It has been described as intensive and collaborative, ideally incorporating an evaluative stage There are a variety of approaches to professional development, including consultation, coaching, communities of practice, lesson study, mentoring, reflective supervision and technical assistance.

Who Participates and Why

A wide variety of people, such as teachers, health care professionals, lawyers, accountants and engineers engage in professional development. Individuals may participate in professional development because of an interest in lifelong learning, a sense of moral obligation, to maintain and improve professional competence, enhance career progression, keep abreast of new technology and practice, or to comply with professional regulatory organizations. Many American states have professional development requirements for school teachers. For example, Arkansas teachers must complete 60 hours of documented professional development activities annually. Professional development credits are named differently from state to state. For example, teachers: in Indiana are required to earn 90 Continuing Renewal Units (CRUs) per year ; in Massachusetts, need 150 Professional Development Points (PDPs) ; and in Georgia, must earn 10 Professional Learning Units (PLUs) . American and Canadian nurses, as well as those in the United Kingdom, are required to participate in formal and informal professional development (earning Continuing education units, or CEUs) in order to maintain professional registration Other groups such as engineering and geoscience regulatory bodies also have mandatory professional development requirements.

Professional development conference proposal?
Q. I am a Reading and English teacher at a middle school. My team of teachers and I would like to attend a conference on middle school essentials this spring which includes many valuable topics such as content area literacy, differentiation, and the middle school philosophy. As the English teacher, I have been in charge of writing the proposal for attending the conference. The problem is that I am a first year teacher and have never written a proposal to attend a conference geared towards professional development. How should I open this paper? What other tips can you give me? Thank you. Our whole team wants to go. How can I mention why it is so important that all of us are permitted to attend the conference?

A. Just a couple of brainstorming ideas: How to prepare the middle school student to become a critical, independent thinker in high school; How can middle school teachers best support and encourage the transition from elementary school to high school; How to prepare the middle school student to meet the expectations of high school students... I hope this helps some! Good luck!!

I am a dedicated inner city high school teacher who attended Professional Development?
Q. and was reimbursed for the expense by the Teaching American History Grant. Now the IRS is saying I owe taxes on that money. The only money I was given was to cover the cost of the motel, conference and flight. Any helpful suggestions? Thank you.

Has anyone gotten a Certified Childcare Professional or Childcare Development Associate crudential?
Q. If so, how hard was the process? How long did it take you to get it?

A. I got my CDA about 4 years ago. It took me 3 month going twice a week for 4 hours and two 8 hour Saturdays. I got mine in Preschool but you can also get it in Infants/Toddlers. It wasn't to hard it is just time consuming and it depends on how you feel about the way your stuff looks and sounds. I had to turn in a binder with a lot of stuff about the different objectives. Don't let that bother you. It was well worth it for me. I am now the Assistant Director at a Childcare Facility and love every minute of it.
