How does transferring from home school to public high school work?
Q. Long story short, I've been homeschooled from 7th grade to now [9th grade]. But my family and I are moving to South Carolina sometime between spring and summer of '09, so I planned on going back into public school there. I need to know how being homeschooled in one state, then moving into another state and being enrolled in public school worked, as far as high school credits go?

A. Contact the counselor at the school you plan to attend for accurate info. Because it is high school, it's not likely that they'll put you in a grade that is higher or lower than the one you "belong" in based on your age. But what courses you receive credit for, and what you still have to take, will depend on what you know, and they may measure THAT with some placement tests. For example, if you're from another state, you may not have taken South Carolina history, and that may be required. Chances are excellent that you will be in good shape academically. South Carolina is very friendly, so go in with an open mind and you will make friends fast. Best of luck.

What day does public school let out summer?
Q. I ask this because I want to officially determine how long me and my boyfriend have been going out. We started going out in a public school, and I transferred into a Charter School (Him to another public school). Now I can't remember what day the public school released..Any help?

A. If you are in the U.S. that will vary from mid May through Mid June. They tend to start later and end later. In the mid-west, they start earlier and end earlier.

Can a public school legally force a student to change their hair color in Orlando?
Q. (Ex: Today one of my friends came to school with the back of her hair dyed blue. Now generally everyone thought that this was cool except for the administration. The administration confronted her and told her that unless she changed her hair color she would not be allowed back in school.) I find this unfair, and it also seems a bit prejudice to not allow someone into school because of their physical appearance. We attend a public school and I want to know if they can legally do this. If not could you please present us with proof. Thank you.

A. I think everyone should dye their hair blue.

Q. I go to a private school and i want to go to a public school again. I am in middle school. School Math standards for private schools in california is 6th - regular math 7th- Math07 or pre algebra 8th- pre algebra or algebra. my teacher says that public schools in california use this too. I don't believe this because my cousin go's to a public middle school and is in 6th grade and her math class is pre algebra. so please answer
Asked by perezy_production - Tue Jun 10 21:46:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on your level of mathematics, there is a special placement exam you must take, and if you score high enough, you will be placed into that high of a class, usually it goes 6th Math, 7th Math, and 8th would go pre algebra, unless your placement allows you to take pre algebra earlier, in which case you skip 6 and 7 and are able to take pre algebra.

What is the best way to return children to public school?
Q. How can I help my children adjust to public school after homeschooling? I have a 5th and 4th grader who have been home-schooled for the last 2 years. One of them is really stressed due to being a tad behind, only because at the beginning of this year, we had a tragic death in the family and school got pushed to the back burner. They are struggling to adjust to hours of homework after school, compared to a few hours of school a day. How do I make this transition easier for them? (please, no horror stories) Thank you so much.

A. I don't know what curriculum you are using, but are you absolutely sure you need to stop home schooling and put the kids in public school? Most home schoolers go at their own pace, and it really doesn't matter if you "get behind". In fact with most home schooling there is no such thing as getting behind. Since many home school kids are so far ahead of their public school peers your kids will probably not be behind in their learning and in fact most likely will be ahead of what the other kids are doing. This will cause another problem, they will become bored with school. Ultimately it is your decision, but make sure you explore all options.

Are public school districts legally allowed to host events in community churches?
Q. I know that given certain circumstances, public schools are allowed to rent out space to religious groups, organizations and churches (as well as non-religious groups and organizations) whenever classes are not in session. However, my question concerns the legality of a public school district to host an event, for employees or students, at one of the community's churches. Feel free to add additional, related insight. Okay, thank you all. I just wanted to be certain. Given the plethora of other viable, large buildings in the city, I found it peculiar.
Asked by Franz - Sun Aug 10 22:35:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be legal. Certainly, as long as they aren't endorsing or prosletyzing for the church in question. Just as a school is just another building, when school is not in session, a church is just a building in between services.

Can a student's clothes be banned in a public school due to irritated religious students?
Q. No matter how satanist it is or whatever? I know that a school cannot ban clothing if it's anything anti religious because public schools are supposed to be secular. But what if there are students who are irritated? Does the school still have the power to ban the student's clothing without violating his 1st amendment rights? Even if the clothing isn't obscene or anything. Ok not anti-religious, but sort of an Anti-Aids shirt or safe sex shirt. What about those? They aren't meant to demean anybody but of course being gay is against one's religion.
Asked by Dummets - Wed Oct 21 21:40:04 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A school could ban shirts of all religious content including anti-religious shirts. It would have to ban both though. And it could not discriminate against one specific religon's shirts.

A. Why can't you spend time with friends and home school? My kids get their school done by lunch usually which frees them up to spend time with friends or do activities they are interested in. They would never have as much time to socialize if they where in public school. Pros for us are: Learn at their own rate, usually far ahead if than if they where in school. Safe and peaceful environment, no bullies or "drama" to distract them from being themselves. Far more free time, no time wasted dealing with discipline issues, lining up to go places, taking role, ect. Exposed to real life and a variety of people, not just grouped in a same aged group and being told what to do and when to do it. The ability to take time off when we choose to.… [cont.]

A. First of all, thanks for asking the important question. I read the responses, and I mostly agree with cold fearrr's answer. I am an elementary teacher in Western NY by the way. Definitely more exercise and movement is needed. RECESS! I disagree with departmentalizing kids into career paths in 8th grade. More than 50% of college students change their major within the four years they take to get a Bachelor's degree. What makes us think an 8th grader is sure what they want to or should do with their life? I do think that we need to stop obsessing over Math and Literacy in the elementary grades. Don't get me wrong, I obviously see their importance, but many students aren't getting their first social studies lesson until third grade! The… [cont.]

Parking in front of public schools when school is not in session?
Q. I live in an area in NYC where street parking is hard to find. I sometimes find spots in front of a public school near my house, where there's no parking from 8am - 5pm on school days. A. Some times you can. If the school you want to attend is crowded they are not going to allow anyone outside of their boarders in. You will also have to provide your own transportation to the school. You need to go to your school district.

Some of the reasons I don't really understand very well. So-- would you let them go to public school? Why or why not? But why not? Just so he could graduate a year early?

It is their life, and while I have had more experiences and have my own opinions, it is not my place to choose for them against their will. I suspect these friends of yours are wanting to go to public school have difficult family relationships. :D

A. It isn't necessarily easier to get into college for a home schooled student. Colleges are looking for stand out students regardless of how they were schooled, be it home school, private school or public school. They are looking for grades, test scores and extracurricular activities. Colleges actively recruit home schooled students. They also actively recruit outstanding public and private schooled students. Colleges set booths at home school conventions. They do at gatherings of schooled students as well. The only overall statistic that I've read is that 60% of home schooled students attend college and 90% of schooled students in honors courses do. I'm certain that less than 60% of high school students attend college, so on average… [cont.]
