Rail transport is the conveyance of passengers and goods by means of wheeled vehicles running along railways or railroads. Rail transport is part of the logistics chain, which facilitates international trade and economic growth. Rail transport is capable of high capacity and is energy efficient, but lacks flexibility and is capital intensive.

It consists of trains running along a permanent way, consisting of steel track on ties and ballast. Alongside is a signalling system and sometimes an electrification system. The rolling stock, fitted with metal wheels, moves with low frictional resistance when compared with road vehicles. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations. Power is provided by a steam engine, diesel engine or electrical transmission. Rail is the safest land transport when compared to other forms of transport.

The oldest, man-hauled railways date to the 6th century BC. With the development of the steam engine, it was possible to construct mainline railways, that were a key component of the industrial revolution. In the 1880s, electric trains were launched, and the first tramways and rapid transit systems came into use. Following the 1940s, unelectrified railways in developed countries replaced steam with diesel. In the 1960s, high-speed rail was launched. Trains have since become more accessible, and some are now driverless. Other forms of rail transport outside of the traditional definition such as maglev trains have also emerged.

What painting has boys on a small railroad car and a sail?
Q. I remember a painting of some boys on a small flat railroad car. It was on rails that were on top of a stone jetty over water. I can't quite remember but I think it also had some sort of make-shift sail. What painting is this?

What are the different Railroad Job Insurance Protection companies out there?
Q. I was curious how many job insurance companies are out there for Railroad Employees. The coverage Im referring to in the insurance you pay for and collect when you get into trouble at work. I know of UTU, LECMPA, BRCF and CPA but are there any others?

A. Locomotive Engineers & Conductors Mutual Protective Association 535 Griswold Suite 1210 Detroit, Michigan 48226-3689 (800) 514-0010 or (313) 962-1512 E-Mail: lecmpa@lecmpa.org Web www.lecmpa.orG Don't leave home without it... I reccommend this above the others. With the others, a committee evaluates the claim and decides if it is in fact payable. This, more like the old BLE insurance, is a true insurance. Of course none of them will cover a speed volation or a violation of rule "G". I know that in the past, the others (UTU and BRCF) have have denied claims where similar infractions have occured in short time span. The thinking there is, well, Joe saw Bill get paid for his little contretemps, so Joe is just trying to milk the… [cont.]

What do you think of a town removing all of it's railroad crossings and making people have to drive longer?
Q. In the town of Belen, NM, where the railyard is located, they have recently removed all of the railroad crossings thus creating more dead end streets. They built a bridge allowing for passage over the train tracks at one point only. This has people driving around for more miles to get to the other side where crossings used to be.

A. That sounds stupid. Maybe they're planning to build crossings at the other points later.
