How to read my home electric meter reading?
Q. How to read electric meter at my house? I live in Long Beach, CA and the meter at my house gives me reading of how much electricity we actually use. As of this morning: The original reading was 17736. Now reads 17820. Unit is KWH. Does it mean that I've used 84 KWH so far? Or there are some other method to calcuate? Please comment Thanks!

A. You are correct. If you look at your electric bill you can find the charge per KWH. Be sure to add in any fuel surcharge and tax to the figure. Mine is $.087. I'd be interested to know how much your power company charges out there. I'm in the midwest. Ret68 could be right too if you are missing a decimal point. How long was your test period?

A. Reading aloud with her, ten minutes a day, will help immensely - have her choose a book, and take turns reading a paragraph or sentence. Encourage her to sound out difficult words with 'word chunks' - give her a high five for patience with identifying sounds. A half-hour of your reading aloud her choice of a daily bedtime story encourages her to listen to the cadence of the words, the expressions you can use, and create a lifelong love of reading. Encourage her to read all homework directions, to foster a confidence and familiarity with them - especially for stress-free test-taking. I encourage students to learn five words a week - then use them in a sentence. My favorite technique is travel words - have the child read a road sign, or… [cont.]

How do I make reading enjoyable for my 11-year old daughter?
Q. My (just turned) 11 year old daughter, does well in school, knows how to read, but hates to read. We try so hard to make it more fun for her, but nothing has worked so far. We know that eventually she will learn to like reading, but in the meantime, does anyone know any books that are age appropriate, but an easier read? Thanks.

A. I am a teacher and my fourth grade students really enjoy Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Fudgemania, SuperFudge, DoubleFudge. Fudge is a boy that does a whole bunch of silly things. They are humorous. Also my students loved Becuase of Winn Dixie, The Magic Tree House Series, etc. It is just finding what kind of books that she likes and then running with it. Keep in mind that not all adults like to read books, but we like to read other things. Maybe have her read the song lyrics to some of her favorite songs while listening to it, or reading the screen of her favorite T.V. program while it is on, magazines are always a favorite as well. I hope that helps out.

A. I'm not sure if it helps, but for me I take some speed reading course and I get much better in reading skills, including comprehension / understanding, as well as speed. May be you can take a look on them to see if it helps. There is also a reading test here, it seems to give some information at the end of the test: Hope this helps.

A. It's simple. Don't think about reading as a skill to practice for an exam. Learn to enjoy it. Check this link out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B 2pQAUqWGWw It talks about how the faster you read, the better your reading and retention skills are. To conclude, there really isn't a benchmark for reading. Go at your own pace. If you don't understand everything, just skip it! If you check up every single vocab. you don't know, you'll be stuck reading the same page for a long time and you'll get so frustrated that you'll stop. You might also want to take articles from various media, e.g. magazines, newspapers, fiction, non-fiction, and see how the language varies across different types of text. What level reading should my 5 year old be on?
Q. I just wanted to know what level my 5 year old/nearly 6 should be reading. She has just gone into year 1 at school and is reading level 3 books quite easily and with no mistakes, i just wondered if this is the correct level for her age. Also does anyone know how many books there are for each level? Thanks in advance. Sorry for any confusion, she is in year 1, not her class are reading level 1, im not sure what her class are reading, hence the reason for asking this question.

A. If a child is on schedule than he/she should read at the level corresponding to what grade they are in. So, a first grader would read at Level 1. A second grader would need to read at Level 2 to be considered average. However, each child is different so you will find children in First Grade who are not yet proficient at Level 1 as well as children who are reading above average at Levels 3 or 4 or even higher. As far as numbers of books, there are going to be literally thousands of books at different reading levels. Your child's classroom probably has a large selection of books along with the choices available in the media center. If you are speaking of a specific language arts curriculum that your daughter's school is using than you will… [cont.]

What is the reading level of murder on the orient express?
Q. I am in 9th grade. Is this too low a reading level for me? If so, what are some mystery books out there that are my reading level?

A. I think I read Agatha Christie books when I was your age. That should be an appropriate reading level. The Sue Grafton alphabet books like "B is for Burglars" are good. Camille Minichino wrote "The Hydrogen Murder", "The Helium Murder", and other "element" murder books. I enjoyed all of those. Also, Mary Higgins Clark is another good mystery author. And David Baldacci is another good one.

What is more accurate, the vernier caliper reading or the micrometer caliper reading?
Q. What is more accurate, the vernier caliper reading or the micrometer caliper reading? How would you know that the instrument is mre accurate than the other by just looking at their least count?
Asked by Donkey_Kong - Sun Jun 22 03:42:10 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The vernier caliper can read up to 0.01cm and the micrometer caliper can read up to 0.001cm (0.01mm). so the micrometer is more accurate. Look at the number of decimal places that they can measure up to in the same unit. In the above, the micrometer can measure up to 3 dec places in cm, compared to 2 dec places in cm, for the vernier caliper.

What is the best way to help a kindergarten student with reading comprehension?
Q. My son is reading pretty well and could go to the next book level but not till his comprehension improves. His teacher says he is still doing great but this needs work. She has given me a list of questions to ask him after we read a book, which he doesn't like very well, so Im trying to just get him to talk about the book. I want him to like learning. He loves to read and loves me to read to him. Any other suggestions to help with reading comprehension? Thanks
Asked by samira - Wed Nov 12 13:04:10 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just be natural! Show a genuine interest in the book that he is reading. Relate what's going on in the book's text or pictures with your son's life (or your own). Making connections (text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world) while reading is a big help for increasing reading comprehension skills. (I wrote the two articles in the source area; the guided reading one is something I did regularly when I was a first grade teacher and the second one is something I do with my own kindergartener.) Have fun reading! (And remember, he's only in kindergarten. I know learning is pretty rushed nowadays, but just remind yourself that the learning will come.)

What might be some ways how music affects reading and thinking?
Q. I've taken a survey for school and discovered that people who play music are smarter than and read more than people who don't play music. However, I need to think of some reasons to possibly explain why this is so. So far I have that people who play music have to read music a lot so reading becomes like second nature and also the people who play music have very strong and alert minds because they have to count musical notes and listen carefully. Can you please help me think of just a few more reasons why I might have gotten my results. Thank you!!!

A. Music explains feelings and emotions and extends them minds understanding. Reading extends words and improves understanding and concentration and spelling and goes into detail and shows a persons commitment and understanding to a book.

Q. I've taken a survey for school and discovered that people who play music are smarter than and read more than people who don't play music. However, I need to think of some reasons to possibly explain why this is so. How do ATC controllers obtain QNH reading ? Does QNH reading being affected during bad weather?
Q. We know that the ATC provides QNH to pilots, but how exactly the ATC recieves QNH information in the first place? ( through a system? a device?) and Does QNH reading being affected during bad weather?

A. Air Traffic Controllers get there weather information directly from Weather reporting equipment that is updated on a screen that usually sits right next to them. At places where their is not equipment that is right next to them then a weather office will call every hour or when a significant weather change occurs, with the current wx information. Winds, sky condition, temp, dew point, altimeter, qnh. The difference in altimeter and QNH is that altimeter is measured in inches of Mercury and QNH is measured in millibars. (metric) The US uses altimeter setting but most of the rest of the world uses QNH. Yes weather has an effect of the QNH and altimeter, if a thunderstorm is moving in then usually the altimeter and the QNH will go down.… [cont.]

How should I assess a 4th grade student who is reading on a 1st grade level?
Q. I am a student studying to be an elementary school teacher and I am currently in a Reading practicum class in a 4th grade elementary school classroom. I have a case study student who I need to assess (the teacher already told me she reads on a 1st grade level) but I need to assess her myself. Do you have any suggestions of tests I can give her? I have a Phonemic Awareness test and I also thought about doing a Yopp-Singer test as well. After I am done assessing her I need to formulate 8 lesson plans for her. I do not even know what to begin teaching her, even if her assessments come out poorly. Do I start with sight words? I would love an experienced teacher's help or a reading specialist to point me in a direction and show me some… [cont.]

A. Well Im not sure how much help this could br but I was always a slow reader and my mom would write down the word "at" from there put a "C" in front to start building words then growing into 4, 5, and 6 letter words with the work "at" in them, it takes time but it helped me, you just need a good building block word to start with

What are your favorite reading conditions for curling up with a good book?
Q. For instance, I love reading in bed when it's raining outside; when I'm alone with a lit candle for added ambience.

A. for me that's an easy one, the kids have to be gone! LOL and usually the hubby as well since he likes to interrupt me. a fire place and a good cup of coffee only enhance things :)
