Why does my fuel gauge read more gas especially at night. And reads lower when the cars hot during the day?
Q. It seems to run better when the gauge reads more gas.
Asked by Kuvimba M - Tue Sep 2 10:36:28 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It could have something to do with the expansion and contraction of the fuel during the hotter and cooler periods of the day, but you should bear in mind that fuel gauges are only a guide to the tanks contents, they are not closely accurate.

What are those designs called where it reads both ways?
Q. Not a palindrome or anagram, but where if you look at it one way, it reads one thing, but from the opposite direction, it reads as a different word? There was a tattoo on "Miami Ink"-viewed right side up it said "ANGEL", but viewed upside down it said "DEVIL". The guy had another tattoo that did the same thing with other words.

A. The design you what you want to know about is an AMBIGRAM. The term describes all the words that are written in such a way so that they can be read normally or reversed upside-down (often with the opposite meaning).

Q. Hi, I'm 14 years old and I really enjoy reading. However I have finished all my books and was wondering what some good reads are? I enjoy reading classics and those set in the olden times. I have recently enjoyed reading: Little Women Black Beauty The Silver Brumby Girl Missing and running for her life. I do enjoy modern ones as well a good laugh or a good cry I just need a good book Thanks Ellie xx
Asked by Ellie G - Wed Dec 31 12:33:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I love classics as well. Here are some of my favorites: Jane Eyre (sad romance/horror but good ending) Anne of Green Gables series ( very uplifting. You can skip over the long descriptions or like me you can revel in them!) Pride and Prejudice (romantic and funny--the movie with Colin Firth in it is amazing too) I also enjoyed Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, Around the World in 80 days (great movie also w/ Jackie Chan) Sense and Sensibility, Tale of Two Cities (heartrending!) The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries--like Hound of the Baskervilles and the Speckled Band. I like most classics. I'm glad someone else still finds them enjoyable. It's amazing how nice they can be when you're not over-analyzing… [cont.]

How far away can the gadget that reads a microchip be?
Q. If I were to microchip a pet what is the furthest the gadget that reads the chip could be away from it - or are we only talking inc..er centimeters? Glad you agree with my shed theory Gonz - however I was contemplating using it on a person - would NASA still help?
Asked by Serendipity - Fri Jan 9 08:37:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I heard they can track the thing from space with the help of NASA cos they are bored, what with no moon landings or shuttles anymore, and want something to do,so they developed this nice little sideline in tracing missing pets, for an an acceptable fee, obviously ... But if you ain't got it chipped you got to go to the small ads and hire a Private Investigator and he will ask around with the other cats, give them a bit of a grilling, and maybe turn over some of the shifty looking local dogs as well ... he'll get some leads that way,and track down the missing mogmeister - maybe it's got trouble with some broad or some fish heist went down wrong and he's gone to ground until the heat dies down? Or some local hood clipped him with a water pistol… [cont.]

If your mercurial barometer reads 1033 millibars and the temperature is 13 C, what is the correct reading?
Q. If your mercurial barometer reads 30.50 inches (1033 millibars) and the temperature is 56 F (13 C), what is the correct reading at 55 N, 150 W? Correct answer: 1031 millibars. My question: why is that so? Given a similar problem, what calculation could I make to correctly answer the question?
Asked by cptnorb - Fri Aug 28 01:27:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think the answer is in the fact that you use a Mercury barometer. The average pressure on earth (1013,25 hPa) is about 760 mm of Mercury. But Mercury changes its density with the temperature and that's why it is used in thermometers. So, the column of Mercury you read on the barometer must be adjusted for the temperature. Incidentally, the average temperature on earth is 15 C. That, together with 1013,25 and 0.65 C per 100 m as the lapse rate, make the Standard Atmosphere (SA) what all instruments are calibrated for. Now, the latitude and longitude you give - after checking with Google Maps - is somewhere at sea, in the Gulf of Alaska. It doesn't say anything else than ... the pressure is measured at sea level. And that's important… [cont.]

A. I think almost all of the hiring goes through talent agents. You have to have a special voice to do voice overs, and they look for those from radio and entertainment. I'm not discouraging you from trying, I think it sounds like a great job too. There is a web site called: www.voices.com I don't know anything about them other than that they try to hire voice actors. I'd look up some of the talent agencies, especially for radio, and talk to them. That's where I'd start anyway, and even if it doesn't work out it might get you one step closer. Good luck.

A. The court clerk, the judge, the seargent at arms, the warden, the captain of the ship or the last one could be the officer of the deck or duty officer. In history even early court reporters were used to once again read the charges against the person. The paper work being read idetifies the person reads aloud the charges and the sentence and the name of the person(a) who instructed the executioner to hang the person and by what authority the person ordering the hanging was working under. Such as a judge duly sworn to uphold the law and set sentences and punishment for capitol crimes.

Good reads for a rather advanced 14 year old?
Q. As a 14-year-old girl, I read much more than average. The problem with that is, I run out of reads fast. I really liked To Kill a Mockingbird and The Old Man and the Sea. Does anyone know any other classics that I might be interested in? Other teenaged books are fine, as long as they aren't any of those badly written prom ones or whatever I see at the teen section. I also like the author M. T. Anderson, if you know him. I like the ideas and plot twists to his novels.

A. Catcher in the Rye. The Great Gatsby. Don Quixote. Wuthering Heights (I stay away from Pride and Prejudice, but you might be more into it than I - same goes for Middlemarch) The Brothers Karamazov, Charterhouse of Parma, Light in August, The Sound and the Fury, The Stranger, The Plague, A Lesson Before Dying, Heart of Darkness, Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me, War and Peace. Ender's Game. All excellent books - and there are many many more. Some are really long (you won't get through them quickly), but great - Like Bros K. W&P, Charterhouse. Some are shorter, but so rewarding to read. If you really liked To Kill a Mockingbird and the Old Man and the Sea, I'd say why bother with most "teenaged" books? Keep searching!

A. That is a very common misconception that temperature and external touch are the same thing. Your body is fighting an infection and heating INSIDE to kill it off. Your external temp (touch) can be as much as 5 degrees cooler than your actual internal temperature (thermometer). Your external is affected by room temp, wind, sweat...
