Is the file quality reduced due to compression and decompression?
Q. Sometimes we need to compress file size for audio/video files (which are generally huge in size) to save space. Is the audio or video quality reduced due to this? How do we know which of the many programs available are good/bad in this respect? Please suggest which compressing programs are good for audio/video/text file like pdf/ps?

A. Yes, quality is generally reduced by greater compression. If it were not then things would probably always be compressed as much as possible. Although mpeg is the most popular compression for audio and video, Ogg is actually much better. Ogg Vorbis for audio and, I think, Ogg Theora for video. Their compression to quality ratio is much better than mpeg (mp3 is an mpeg standard) and, curiously, Ogg is open, while mpeg is proprietary. I'm not so familiar with text file compression. I wouldn't consider pdf so much of a compression format, however, as its purpose is more one of portability and impermeability. PDF is not intended to be edited.
