Reference is the intensional use of one thing to indicate something else.

Some examples are: the name Jane Doe used to identify a particular woman; a traffic sign warning of an upcoming turn-off; author-title-date information in bibliographies and footnotes, specifying complete works of other people; a wedding ring indicating a certain kind of relationship; and samples of various musical works being incorporated into a new one. References may be indicated by sounds like names, pictures like roadsigns, text like bibliographies, indexes like numbers and objects like rings; but a range of other concrete or abstract methods can be used, including methods that deliberately hide the reference from some observers, as in cryptography.

Keeping a diary allows an individual to use references for personal organization, whether or not anyone else understands the systems of reference used. However, scholars have studied methods of reference because of their key role in communication and co-operation between different people, and also because of misunderstandings that can arise. Modern academic study of reference has been developing since the 19th Century.

When reference is intended, what the reference points to is called the referent.

How do I use reference angles in the unit circle?
Q. I need to turn in the unit circle with the coordinates and the radians, but our teacher told us that we have to use reference angles for something something... how do I use them?

A. Reference angles are the basic angles in quadrant I that allow you to figure out all the other angles in the other quadrants. Angles such as 0, 30, 45, 60, and 90 are reference angles. The coordinates are (cos, sin), where cosine corresponds to the X-coordinate and sine corresponds to the Y-coordinate. 360 degrees = 2pi radians. With that, you can set up ratios to find the corresponding radian measure for a given angle. For instance, with an angle of 0, you would have 0 radians (0/360 = 0/2pi). The coordinate would be (cos 0, sin 0) = (1,0) An angle such as 45 degrees would correspond to pi/4 radians (45/360 = pi/4 radians). The coordinate would be (cos pi/4, sin pi/4) = ((sqrt2)/2, (sqrt2)/2. If you are using a calculator to find the… [cont.]

How can I reference the information I get on Yahoo answers for school reports?
Q. I think yahoo answers is GREAT! I've learned everything from politics, history, religion all the way through sex education. Stuff I cant share with my parents Ive been able to find the answers. Anyway I've been using a lot of the information already in school. How do I cite it as a reference. Do I say from a source in Yahoo Answers? I just have been writing it in my reports mainly social studies and biology and not saying it came from Yahoo but crediting it to another source. I think all you great people who take the time to give me such good information and advice should get credit for your great work. Thanks to all of you I learned that I have to check the information, go to the web sites listed and check there, or cite it as an… [cont.]

A. I get very angry when people try to have Yahoo Answers people do their homework. If your teacher knows that you're using Yahoo as a substitute for homework, I'm betting they give you a ZERO. It's horrible - each night I see people who are obviously posting their homework here, even when it would be quicker to google the answer. The only difference would be someone who takes some sort of opinion or experience poll. Even then it would be very unscientific and of little value aside from some colorful comments. If you do that then I'd print out the web pages you're gonna quote, and have those ready if the teacher / prof asks for them.

What is the biological reference when hydrogen peroxide is mixed with catalase?
Q. Basically, in an experiment we added h2o2 to catalase which released o2 in a testtube. we had a pressure sensor attached to the test tube and this recorded enzyme activity. What is the biological reference to this experiment?

A. i think it would be hydration because in the experiment the H2O2 breaks up into oxygen and water.
