what exactly is a work related reference?
Q. hi, i was asked by a potential employer to provide 4 references. At least 2 of them have to be work related. Can someone please clarify what is an acceptable work reference/personal reference? I am planning to use my former manager, and a co-worker as work related references, and 2 friends as personal references. Also is there anything i should consider when choosing a reference? what types of questions do they generally ask references? i am applying for a bank job.

A. your choices are fine. work related is what it is, work related. and same with the other references. looks like you got it right. and as for what you should look for? your good friends are the ones to put down, if there a good friend they will give good answers about you! and as for work related, your boss and superiors are the best. so yup, you got it all looks like. why do you have a question?

Who to use as a reference on a job application if you have none?
Q. In other words, if you have never been employed before, who would you use as a reference on your employment application? I'm aware that family is not recommended. My only valid job reference is a resort in FL and i worked for the summer but was not on a payroll. I simply worked and was payed directly from my employer. That is only one of three references that i'm required to have. I want tips from experienced long-time workers.

A. At the beginning of your career, this is known. So bring in references from 3 teachers or 3 folks that you babysat for or helped out. Bring in 3 personal references too. Just be honest about your lack of experience. In many entry level jobs, this is exactly what they want, as they want to train you to their way of doing things.

How Important are job references? What happens when the employer calls a reference and the person has moved?
Q. Can you use a reference if they have moved companies? Are you suppose to keep in contact with all of them?
Asked by Christine L - Fri Aug 17 15:35:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify that your references are still valid and have valid contact info (and that way they know to expect calls as well!) Always! =) And yes, you can use them as a reference if they've changed companies - you just need to list what your relationship was... and make sure that person is still willing to be a reference. I have several like that! For example for a former boss at XYZ co on my application... Jane Doe, former HR Director at XYZ Company currently VP of Benefits at ABC Company Work# Cell# (if you have it) Email (for work or personal or both)

What is the oldest reference of the dead coming back to life?
Q. The term "Undead" wasn't even created until late 1800's in Dracula. But we all should know that there have been references to the undead long before that. Egyptians? The Bible? Tribal indians? Cave paintings? What is the absolute oldest reference to the dead coming back to life?

A. The Egyptians. Osirus was supposedly brought back from the dead by his wife/sister Isis long enough to conceive his son Horus. Then he was appointed/took over the job of king of the underworld. Its kind of a creepy legend with the incest and having sex with zombies. I don't think we can tell with enough detail on cave painting walls, but they may have had such a legend. Too bad all the details are lost.

What does Reference number 1221 mean, when checking wheres my refund?
Q. Yesterday when I checked the IRS website under wheres my refund, it stated that my refund would be deposited on the 16th, when I checked this morning, Your return is being processed and if you have not received your return within 4 weeks please call the IRS and mention reference number 1221.

A. Sounds like what others here have been experiancing where they have received a number code like that and it usually means your return is under review. That happened to a lot of the January efilers who were suppose to get a refund on 1/26. It does seem strange that they would change it the day before the scheduled direct deposit date and put a reference code up. I would definitely call the IRS and they can at least give you an update on what's been happening. It's what others that have posted here with your same problem have done, but it does take awhile to get through, so hang in there!

How do I reference a movie franchise or series using the Harvard system?
Q. I can find how to reference a tv series or one film, but how do you reference a movie series if you don't refer to any of the individual ones? Such as "the Harry Potter series" or "the Indiana Jones and Mummy franchises." I figured putting the first and last years of production in-text and listing each film in the references, but if anyone knows an easier way please let me know! Cheers.

A. Harvard System of Referencing Guide The Harvard system is the most frequently used referencing style at UWE. Despite this, there is no agreed 'standard' for referencing all resources. Remember, references should always be correct, complete and consistent. Titles of books, reports, journals etc. can be italicised or underlined. Whichever you choose, be consistent.

How to ask for reference whom you haven't talked to in a long time?
Q. I have a potential good reference (best I can get) and the problem is that I have not talked to her in a very long time about a year. I am planning on e-mailing her but I am not sure what to say in the letter, for I am kind of worried that it will sound demanding or pushy. What should I write to her? A. Simply re-connect - say hello, ask how she is, tell her what your goal is in applying for this new job and simply come out and ask for reference. If you had a good relationship with her and you're confident she'll say good things about you, there is no need to worry about being demanding or sounding pushy. References are very, very common in the world of business and people give them for people who deserve good references. It's just standard practice. Another point is that one year is NOTHING in terms of time that has passed - I have references from years ago and they still give me good references when asked. What is the reference pressure for a decibil for music programs like garageband?
Q. Given that a decibil is a logarithmic unit, if the reference pressure were the smallest that a human ear could hear, I believe (unless I'm mistaken) that that would mean if the pressure equaled the reference pressure, 0 decibils would be virtually inaudible. However, in garageband, 0 decibils is clearly very clearly audible. If that is the case, what is the reference pressure used in such programs?
Asked by Mr. Politics - Fri Aug 25 21:46:15 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You are entirely correct, except for the part about "garageband." The problem here is that there are two ways to use decibels. One way is as a purely relative measure. The ratio of two different signal or sound amplitudes can be expressed in decibels. This requires no absolute calibrations. This is the only thing that "Garageband" can do, because there is no calibration. However, if you have an expensive calibrated microphone you can measure absolute sound pressures that we call "decibels Sound Pressure Level" or dB SPL. In this case, 0 dB SPL is barely audible. The reference pressure is 2e-10 bar rms (1 bar is about 1 atmosphere) or 2e-05 Pascal rms. If I remember correctly, this is the same as an acoustic intensity of 1e-12… [cont.]

A. I would include all references in the main list - you can place the appendix before the references (in the Harvard System) which would make sense. Your tutor should give you guidance as to which your examiner is likely to prefer (that's what they are there for).

How to reference books for information that will be reproduced and sold?
Q. I'm writing a learning game and taking information out of different books. Can I just reference the authors in MLA or do I need to also call for permission? Is there a good site that explains how to do this and when it is necessary to ask the publisher for permission to take information out? If I change half the words in a sentence of 10 words, do I need to reference where I got the information and ask permission? What are the rules?

What happens when the ground reference is disconnected from an electric circuit?
Q. I understand the concept that ground is the zero voltage reference point with respect to the rest of the circuit, but with the ground disconnected, will the circuit continue to function? I was playing a bit with an small circuit, but I found out, even with ground disconnected, the circuit continues to work? Is this really the case or not? What's the reasoning behind this? I was trying to justify it by thinking that the circuit continues to work because the electrons in the circuit haven't yet accumulated up to the point where the voltage would to equal. But that reasoning sounds pretty dubious because of how fast electrons move. So what would be the logical explanation for the circuit to continue to function? thanks.
Asked by Mystery of Life - Tue Aug 14 22:31:04 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Current stops circulating only if the ground is part of the circuit, If it's just the third (ground) prong of the outlet, you've only defeated a safety device; the current will still circulate from hot to neutral.

Q. When working with holographic films and the process to capture an image on them; a coherent light sources beam is split then an interference pattern between the two is reconstructed on a film surface. When working with holographic films and the process to capture an image on them; a coherent light sources beam is split then an interference pattern between the two is reconstructed on a film surface. It is this interference pattern and the information it contains that forms 3-D image. A few questions come to mind: 1: Do people with normal depth perception use a certain frequency of light as a reference to construct a 3-D model of the world? 2: If so, is this frequency constant or does it vary from person to person based upon the distance their eyes are apart, the focal depth from their lens to their retina, and the specific photochemistry occurring? 3: If not, what is the frame of reference used by the mind to transform individual… [cont.]

A. Any frequency of light will due, but usually near red or infared is used, because its easy to get Lasers in that frequency range

What is the best theoretical computer science reference book?
Q. I need a book that covers all the topics of theoretical computer science, a sort of bible reference for theoretical computer science. Thanks!

A. Good luck finding that. To cover that range with any depth would mean tens of thousands of pages. The reference is the closest I can think of, and even its four volumes don't cover the field.

How do I do in text citation in APA format for repeated reference of the same source?
Q. The hardest part here is that I am referencing an online simulation with no author. I have the name of the simulation, year, the content owner is the school, and I have the web address. I reference info or ideas from the simulation about every other paragraph, and it is the only source I reference in the paper.

A. you need to put "according to..." the at the end (last name of author, pg # content was found.) never directly quote something unless it is of extreem importance and never make a quote longer than a few words. Also when paraphrasing do not write exactly what they have, write a general sense of what they were trying to say. You will fail from plaigarism if you do this wrong. There are APA style manuals that you can buy from a book store or on amazon.
