A ritual may be or may not performed on specific occasions, or at the discretion of individuals or communities. It may be performed by a single individual, by a group, or by the entire community; in arbitrary places, or in places especially reserved for it; either in public, in private, or before specific people. A ritual may be restricted to a certain subset of the community, and may enable or underscore the passage between religious or social states.

The purposes of rituals are varied; they include compliance with religious obligations or ideals, satisfaction of spiritual or emotional needs of the practitioners, strengthening of social bonds, demonstration of respect or submission, stating one's affiliation, obtaining social acceptance or approval for some event — or, sometimes, just for the pleasure of the ritual itself.

Rituals of various kinds are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present. They include not only the various worship rites and sacraments of organized religions and cults, but also the rites of passage of certain societies, oaths of allegiance, coronations, and presidential inaugurations, marriages and funerals, school "rush" traditions and graduations, club meetings, sports events, Halloween parties, veteran parades, Christmas shopping and more. Many activities that are ostensibly performed for concrete purposes, such as jury trials, execution of criminals, and scientific symposia, are loaded with purely symbolic actions prescribed by regulations or tradition, and thus partly ritualistic in nature. Even common actions like hand-shaking and saying hello are rituals.

What is the evolutionary benefit of ritual?
Q. Biologically, ritual (all, not just religion) must have had some benefit for it to be selected for. What was that benefit? How does ritual enhance survival?

A. It's not so much an evolutionary "benefit" itself, as much as it is a byproduct of other traits. Humans have evolved with a great knack for pattern matching. This has numerous survival benefits. For example: learning how when you plant corresponds with when you yield the most crops, recognizing signs of danger in the wild, etc. Though for better or worse, humans can compulsively project "patterns" where none exist. An athlete for example might end up winning a big tournament when he wore a certain pair of socks, and then they become his "lucky socks". Even if he wins only half of the time, he still insists on wearing them. So a lot of ritual stems form this type of false pattern matching. Though on a bigger scale, ritual and… [cont.]

What is the weirdest ritual you perform to help your team win when watching a game?
Q. I know some people always have to be eating chili and drinking a beer with their left hand. Or others who have to say things aloud like the coach can hear. I want to know some strange things fans are superstitious about.

A. I find that drinking as much as I possibly can is usually a ggod way to go. If they start to lose, I must drink even more to reverse the trend. Try that, and you will like sports a whole bunch more.
