A. Whew. Good luck with THAT. I suppose the primary argument for him NOT to be the national hero (but a hero nonetheless) is that the guy was basically a pacifist. He didn't agree that a violent overthrow of the spanish regime was the solution for the country's ills. He clearly shows this point in his books Noli/Fili when the guy supposed to represent him actually argued AGAINST rebellion with the rebel leader. His argument was founded on both the low probability of success as well as the ends NOT justifying the means. One can even argue that his books could NOT actually have fueled the bulk of the masses since a large part of the population at the time could not read and/or have access to his work!
