A scholarship is an award of access to an institution, or a financial aid award for a student to further education. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award.

Scholarships

According to The Hobsons UK Boarding Schools Guide [1] many independent senior schools and a few independent preparatory schools offer scholarships to attract bright or talented pupils. They are usually awarded, after a competitive examination and interview, for academic, musical or artistic merit, and normally take no account of financial need. Academic scholarships are the most common, followed by scholarships for music, art, design and technology, and sport.

Gifted children from outside the UK are invited to compete in open scholarship examinations. The schools hold these exams in the September to December and January to April terms of the year before admission. The exam papers can be sent to British Council offices around the world, so that children in other countries are able to sit the examinations locally.

Scholarships will usually be awarded at ages 11, 13 and 16, with pupils already at the school having the opportunity to sit for awards at 13 and 16. Scholarships at the age of 16 for candidates already at the school are frequently awarded on the basis of GCSE results, with awards for new students being made as a result of an interview and report from the previous school, usually with the requirement to achieve certain grades at GCSE. Competition is very strong, but, as long as the pupil makes satisfactory progress, a scholarship is normally held for the duration of his or her time at the school. Scholarships typically cover up to half the fees but they are increasingly being means-tested, so the award may be less.

What will happen to scholarship money that is left over from college tuition?
Q. I am getting ready to enter college and I have a state-funded scholarship that pays for my tuition at a state college (Louisiana's TOPS Program). However, I have many other things to pay such as books, housing (off-campus), and electricity bills, meals, gas, clothes, entertainment, etc. My question is this: If I get additional scholarships, will I be able to use that money to pay for what I chose? Does my college regulate that money, or can I use it to pay rent or bills? Do I receive the money or does my college receive it? What happens to scholarship money once college tuition is paid?

A. Some scholarships are paid directly to you. These are usually not related to the college you're attending. Most scholarships are paid directly to the college. In most cases, you get "financial aid Christmas" -- that's a day each semester when we get all of the excess financial aid money in our financial aid account. Caution though - many scholarships are need based. That means if you get another scholarship that covers cost, you no longer have "need" and drop that one. Know too - very often, if there is excess money (above tuition) in your financial aid account, you can charge your books to that account at the campus bookstore. There may be an application fee to allow this - look into it. Otherwise, you have to buy your books out… [cont.]

How long should a general scholarship essay be?
Q. How many words is normally expected in a scholarship essay? I have a lot to say, but don't want to make it excessive in length. How long of an essay would a scholarship committee expect?
Asked by iNsTaNt pUdDiNhEaD - Sat Mar 1 20:40:25 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on what the topic and instructions are. Different scholarships ask for different lengths. Some might even ask you to incorporate your answers to certain questions/guidelines in your essay. Short essays are usually 250 words. Most essays are 500 words (similar to college essays). Longer essays are 600 to 1000 words. But don't write more than 1,000 words unless the instructions specifically tell you to write more than 1,000 words OR you are entering a research paper scholarship competition. Don't forget to double space your essay so your reader will have an easier time reading your essay. Good luck!

What do colleges do with your extra scholarship money?
Q. I have probably over $10,000 of extra scholarship money from outside things. If I don't spend them at the end of the year (say they are one time scholarships) does the college give it back to me in a check? What happens to it?
Asked by The Ides of March - Mon May 19 18:48:47 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the college reimburses the extra money back to you in a check (or our school has a direct deposit program set up with our banks) Whooo-hooo! that's such a great feeling to get so much back! Congratulations! I would save most of it for future uses such as school, apartments, or to get a head start in repaying back student loans if you have any. Good luck in school! :-)
