A school (from Greek σχολή (scholē), originally meaning "leisure", and also "that in which leisure is employed", "school"), is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below), but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also have access to and attend schools both before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3-5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after (or in lieu of) secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.

There are also non-government schools, called private schools. Private schools may be for children with special needs when the government does not supply for them; religious, such as Christian Schools, Khalsa Schools, Torah Schools and others; or schools that have a higher standard of education or seek to foster other personal achievements. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training and Military education and training.

In homeschooling and online schools, teaching and learning take place outside of a traditional school building.

How Hard is the Juilliard School to get in to?
Q. I am a Freshman in high school and was wondering how hard was the Juilliard school to get in to? I know it's very hard, and I have only been playing the violin for 8 months, but have been accepted into my high school's 2nd best orchestra and have made much progress. If I were to practice very well and properly everyday for around 6-8 hours on school days and around 8-10 hours on weekends for the rest of my high school years, do I have a chance to get into Juilliard or any other very nice music school in the U.S.? P.S. I can also learn music at a very fast pace, and I also know how to play the guitar, piano, and clarinet.

A. Really really really hard. They have a 7% acceptance rate... especially for an instrument like the violin.. its very competetive, you'll have to be the best of the best. If you're really determined to get in you should look into getting private lessons now, and maybe audition for some local youth orchestras. You'll need the experience. Like I said, they only accept 7% of applicants, but if its really your dream, go for it. Nobody thought I'd get into the school I got into either... Also, something to consider - Julliard is a hardcore conservatory. If you go there you will live, breath, and eat violin, and do absolutely nothing else. They don't have general education requirements like other colleges, so music is all you'll do, which may… [cont.]

How do I find out my daughters school local ranking?
Q. I want to enroll my soon to be three year old in pre-school. I want to send her to a good school because I don't want to have to keep moving her from school to school after I find things out about the school. Is there a website I can go on that will tell me the school local and national ranking along with test scores and stuff.

A. Your state should have a Department of Education. Go to their website. It should provide information about every school in the state, including testing scores for previous years, demographics, and rankings.
