A season is a division of the year, marked by changes in weather.

Seasons result from the yearly revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the plane of revolution. In temperate and polar regions, the seasons are marked by changes in the intensity of sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface, variations of which may cause animals to go into hibernation or to migrate, and plants to be dormant.

During June, July and August, the northern hemisphere is exposed to more direct sunlight because the hemisphere faces the sun. The same is true of the southern hemisphere in December, January, and February. It is the tilt of the Earth that causes the Sun to be higher in the sky during the summer months which increases the solar flux.

In temperate and polar regions generally four seasons are recognized: spring, summer, autumn, winter.

In some tropical and subtropical regions it is more common to speak of the rainy (or wet, or monsoon) season versus the dry season, because the amount of precipitation may vary more dramatically than the average temperature. For example, in Nicaragua, the dry season is called Summer (Oct to May) and the rainy season is called Winter (Apr to Nov) even though it is located in the northern hemisphere.

In other tropical areas a three-way division into hot, rainy and cool season is used.

In some parts of the world, special "seasons" are loosely defined based upon important events such as a hurricane season, tornado season or a wildfire season.

Chinese seasons are traditionally based on 24 periods known as solar terms, and begin at the midpoint of solstices and equinoxes.[2]

What exactly does a season counter look like?
Q. Hey guys, I'm doing a project which involves getting stuck on a hypothetical island and then doing various tasks. This is one of my last things I need to create: A season counter. Is this a specific object, or just something that's like a wheel? I need help on this, I have no idea what to make. The season counter can't be electronic, I have to be able to make it by hand (hence the island part). Thanks alot.

A. Since you may be on a tropical island with no definite weather seasons, the changing position of the sun throughout the year is your best indicator of changing seasons. A sun-based season counter might just be a stick in the ground to cast a shadow, with marks on the ground to indicate the noon shadow at different times of the year. The extreme positions of the noon shadow (shortest and longest, or longest on either side of the stick, depending on your latitude) will be the first days of summer and winter, while the first days of spring and fall will be when the shadow is at the midpoint between the two extremes. The seasons can then be counted off using tally marks, piles of coconuts, or whatever.

Could I season my chicken fried steak breading with rosemary?
Q. I'm just trying to come up with something different, plus I have a rosemary plant and I really want to use some of it. Or, maybe if not with the flour coating, could I season mashed potatoes with rosemary? And how would I go about doing that? Would it taste good, or would the flavors clash?

A. I wouldn't put it in the mashed potatoes. Rosemary is pretty chewy and it would ruin the texture. You can add it to the coating if you chop it finely, but rosemary is a dominating flavor so go easy and don't add anything else besides salt and pepper. Rosemary doesn't play well with other herbs. You could also put a sprig into the frying oil to flavor the oil and get the taste that way. Similar to what you'd do making sage butter for pasta. Another good thing is to do a pork roast or leg of lamb. Cut slits in the roast and shove in rosemary leaves and slices of fresh garlic, using the tip of a paring knife to ram it in.
