A. Here's a couple of general hints: If you're going for an entry level position and you're just entering the workforce, then keep your resume to 1 page. If you have lots of experience and are applying for a higher level secretarial job, you can extend it to 2-3 pages. Also here is the URL of a nice resume improvement blog:

Can a medical secretary be sued by a patient if she sent them the wrong lab work?
Q. I am doing a paper about a medical secretary who mixed up two patients lab results. Everyone says that by the HIPPAA laws, she can be sued, is this accurate? Or do they sue the doctor's office? What would the lawsuit be for? What disciplinary actions could be taken against the secretary? Please help, I can't find much about laws concerning the front office staff!

What is the difference between a professional secretary and a bilingualsecretary?
Q. Who is a professional secretary and who is a bilingual secretary? And who is the highest?
Asked by gloriantiamoah - Wed Jan 28 11:24:54 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. a bilingual secretary speaks at least two languages. there is no universal standard for these job titles that will tell you which one is higher than the other. It depends on the job classification system in the particular workplace. all other duties and responsibilities being equal, a secretary that can read and write in a professional manner in more than one language, for a firm that does business in two or more of those languages, will probably be more valuable to the firm and perhaps make more money than a similar job with a person who only speaks one language

What are the requirements to become the secretary of state?
Q. Me and my grandmother are sitting here wondering... What do you have to do to become the secretary of state? Do you have to be a natural born citizen or do you have to be a certain age? Please tell me everything that you know about the secretary of state.
Asked by Brittany S - Wed Mar 4 10:15:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hi Brittany, That's a good question. The answer is, no, there are no actual demands other than the person being an American citizen. America's most successful Secretary of State in the last 50 years was Henry Kissinger who was born in Germany and speaks English with a thick German accent. The qualifications aren't legal but political and professional. Presidents look for people to fill those slots who have professional training and background and who basically agree with them on how problems should be handled. These professional qualifications are really the determining factor.

what's the difference between an Administrative Assistant and a Legal Secretary?
Q. Is there any difference between an Adm. Ass. , a secretary and a legal secretary? What duties do they have to perform? Why d legal secretaries make from 10K-30K more than an Adm. Assistant?
Asked by marie h - Sat Nov 24 09:24:36 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Tequila Lucky is right. An Administrative Assistant is a more general position and does not usually have any requisite knowledge or experience. A Legal Secretary is going to need to have some kind of Legal experience and knowledge. It's a more specialized position, so they're going to make more money. Sometime Legal secretaries are required to have a paralegal degree or working towards one. Administrative Assistants are not required to have a degree, but it's always a plus.

How do I go about finding the department secretary in a certain major at my college?
Q. I was told to speak the department secretary in the religious studies department at my school however; after over an hour scanning our college website i cannot find who this person is. Are department secretary's of a particular study usually teachers?
Asked by Kai - Mon Nov 17 12:22:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, the secretary does the administrative work, they aren't a professor. If you can't find one for that particular major, try finding one for the school - whatever college it falls under, like Arts or Humanties. They can probably direct you to the right person.

Does a Company Secretary need to sign dividend minutes and tax vouchers?
Q. I am Director of a Ltd Company. I have a Company Secretary (my wife). I am also the sole employee of the company as I work as a contractor. When I issue dividends to myself and do the meeting minutes and tax voucher does the Company Secretary have to sign the paperwork or can I issue the tax voucher and meeting minutes with only my signature (saying that only I, as Director, was in attendance)? I am the only shareholder in the company.
Asked by dollybird - Tue Dec 9 14:34:15 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. From an accounting perspective, One Step is right - the members need to approve dividend payments. Practically, you as Director can sign anything - although you don't say this, I am assuming you are sole director. Since 1 April 2008, your company does not require to have a company secretary (although you can still have one) so the flip-side is that the director can sign anything. Also, the company does not now require to convene any AGM's

How can I politely tell my secretary to dress a bit less provocatively?
Q. My secretary started off dressing quite appropriatly for the kind of company I own. Then came the low cut tops and mini skirts. Then the complete absence of undergarments and then the purple hair puffed up and round like a tornado. John does a very good job, but somehow he doesn't project the image I want my company to have. I will admit, he looks pretty good in a thong. But he doesn't wear those anymore. By the way, my company is in Califrornia.

Is someone a secretary of a school or the Principals personal secretary?
Q. Just in general, if there was a secretary at an elementary school, who worked in the front office, handled the phones, signed kids in and out, etc., would this person be secretary of the school OR the Principals personal secretary (example: the principal makes a list of things "to do" and gives it to the secretary.) Just curious what your opinion would be.
Asked by Dorothy S - Thu Nov 13 15:10:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That person would be the school secretary. Many schools also have an administrative assistant or executive assistant to the principal. This person would handle tasks for the principal and/or act on behalf of the principal when required. There are schools where both of these jobs are handled by the same person, but where I am from that is rare.

Is the guidance secretary of a middle and high school supposed to print student schedules for music teachers?
Q. I just started a job as a guidance secretary for a middle and high school. I am very busy during the day with my daily guidance duties. However, I know I must do work for the guidance counselors, but am I supposed to print student schedules for others such as music teachers, ocupational therapists, reading teachers, etc? I seem to be working overtime a lot in order to get all my work done. I keep finding notes on my desk asking me to print out student schedules for other people not part of the guidance department. Can any guidance secretaries respond.

A. I'm a teacher, not a secretary, but at our school ALL staff have access to ALL student schedules using our gradebook/attendance software. I would check with the counselors to see whether these other people really cannot get the schedules without you, or if they are just looking for a shortcut. If they can access the schedules but are repeatedly asking you to do it, perhaps some training is needed: here's how to do it, please do not ask our secretary as he/she has a million other things to do! I'm betting that your predecessor was ok with that request, and everyone's assuming that you will be, too. That policy will need to come from the principal or someone else who has the power to say "Here's how it's gonna work from now on!" If… [cont.]

How many people still confuse a paralegal with a legal secretary?
Q. They are very different you know. A legal secretary is just a secretary with some legal oriented office management training. A paralegal is someone who can do everything a lawyer can except represent people in court and give legal advice. I know, because I've been trained and worked as both. Is this clear or do people out there still not understand the difference? to raven sunn: au contraire mon frere, paralegals ARE allowed to help people, they just can't give legal advice. What is the function of a political secretary in Malaysia?
Q. Malaysian government consists of ministers (members of the Cabinet) assisted by deputy ministers (non-Cabinet members). But there is a position called political secretary who reports to a minister and usually appointed among politicians just like a minister and a deputy minister. I'm not sure why a minister need such person if he/she already has a deputy (or more) and civil servants to assist him/her. This is not to be confused with parliamentary secretary, a position which no longer exist since the last general election and which I also wonder why the position should exist at the first place.
