How long is similac advance formula good for?
Q. I'm giving my newborn similac advance powder formula. If my newborn only drinks half the bottle, how long is it good for? Can it be refridgerated? I've been dumping it, haven't been taking any chances, but just want to know how long can I leave it at room temp and save it for a little later?
Asked by Katelyn B - Thu Aug 21 22:54:25 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Once she starts drinking it she needs to drink it within an hour. If it is refrigerated without her drinking out of it then it is good for 24 hours. If she is always drinking half of it, why don't you make half of what you are making now? If you need more it doesn't take much to make more. I would rather have to make more than throw half a bottle away.

My son is on Similac Advance. But do you switch them to a different one when they start eating solids?
Q. He will be 14 weeks on sunday and I heard once they start eating cereal you can change their formula. My mother in law said switch him to good start. But is that really necessary? He does great on Similac, so why would I want to switch him?

A. There is no reason to switch formulas when starting solids. Don't listen to your MIL. They are notoriously unreliable sources of baby information.

Should I be concerned that Similac Organic and Sensitive baby formula mixes are mostly sugar?
Q. Similac Organic's third ingredient is "organic sugar." Similac Sensitive's first and second ingredient are: Corn Syrup Solids and Sugar. Should I be concerned that these formulas are mostly sugar? If anyone has been using these products please let me know how your baby reacted to them. Thanks!

A. I am not a parent, but I remember helping my father prepare "sugar water" for my brother when he was a baby about to come home from the hospital. Babies do need some sugar, and normally breast fed babies get that through their mothers. However, I know Similac has been around for years and years. I wonder how much "sugar in the formula" has been affecting kids, and teaching them a sweet tooth -- strongly contributing to the problems today with obesity. Here is a cool article on the nutrition in infant formula:

What is the difference between Similac Isomil Advanced and just the regular Similac Isomil.?
Q. My 2 mo. old is on Similac Isomil andvanced and i stubbled acrossed just regular similac isomil in walmart. WIC pays for the advanced but at the end of every month i have to buy an extra can or 2. I was just wondering what's the difference because the regular isomil is cheaper than the advance.
Asked by twinmommi - Fri Jan 4 17:37:38 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The advance has that new DHA and Ara which is suppose to benefit eye and brain develoment, and the regular Isomil is the original one that does not contain that, so that is whi it is cheaper, I buy the original just because that is what my previous 2 children were on, either or is fine.

A. Have you checked out ? that site is awesome for free samples of all sorts, they add a new one every day which is sweet. They don't make you fill out surveys or gimics either. You can sign up to the newsletter as well to get the free sample e-mailed to you, but it is not required. They also some times have free contests and stuff where the first one to comment wins prizes. Enjoy!

How long should you leave similac out?
Q. I was wondering how long similac milk can last in a bottle outside the refridgerator before it is no good?
Asked by johnell_jones - Sat Feb 10 00:57:10 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. From the time it is mixed it can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. If it is left out at room temperature it should all be used within 1 hour. If there's any left at the end of a feeding it should be thrown out. Hope that helps.

Why similac step 1 formula leaves foam in the bottle after each feeding?
Q. I'm feeding my 6 weeks old son with similac step 1 formula. Lots of foam was found in the bottle after each feed. I don't know whether the foam will cause colic to my baby. Does anyone encounter the same problem as mine?
Asked by SY - Fri Dec 7 22:57:41 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think it's common with most powdered formulas and happens when you shake it to mix it. The liquid is more expensive but wont do that if you're concerned. What worked for me was a plastic pitcher that had a mixing arm attached so that it stirred it on the bottom with a crank at the top. (I hope that paints a clear enough picture for you.) I think we found it in a baby product catalog but I've seen them in the grocery store since and at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. And when it got to the foam part, I called that bottle done! Good luck!

Does anyone know what can happen if your infant is allergic to Similac?
Q. I have a 2 month old son, for the first month he was another milk and when I started to Wic they put him on Similac. Now I've notice little red bumps under his neck? Have this happen to anyone and was it the milk?
Asked by Susie Q - Wed Apr 1 12:44:49 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would think if he was allergic he would have a hard time keeping it down. You may also notice a change in his stools and a lot more diaper rash. My daughter got a yeast infection in the crease under her neck when she was about 3 months old. At first it just looked like a rash and then got all lumpy curdily. I thought it was just a rash until I wiped it out one day and it bled a little. We had to put some ointment on it and it cleared right up. If you concerned are I would call your Pediatricians office. Most offices have a staff nurse that can answer basic questions so you don't have to go in. Good luck!

Why is Ty Pennington the spokesperson for the new Similac smart pack formula?
Q. It really makes no sense to me... couldn't they get a Mom? I am just wondering why Similac would have chosen Ty Pennington and why they think that appeals to Moms?

A. I think it is b/c Similac "redesigned" their container and Ty is known for design. It didn't appeal to me as a mom, however.

What was your experience using Similac Formula?
Q. My son is almost 7 weeks old and has been on Similac Advance with omega 3 and 6 since birth but he seems to be really gassy from it. I really do not want to switch formula because this is a great formula and he is gaining weight and progressing with it. I want to know your experiences and did you switch if so what to and did it help?
Asked by Happy mommy - Mon Oct 5 14:56:14 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We had the same problem. When we first put our son on it, after switching from breast milk, he was really gassy and constipated. So, we switched him to Similac Isomil. It's soy based and works a lot better for us. A few days after he'd been on it, his system got back to normal and we haven't had gas/constipation/fussines s problems since! And that was 9 months ago :o)

A. I couldn't find anywhere Similac was on sale at Supermarkets. You can try Babies R Us. They may still have the big 20% more can on sale. Other than that, I know many Targets have been putting their Similac Sensitive 20% more can of formula on clearance. 3 Targets near me have it for $16.10. Check out every Monday. They list the formula & diaper sales for the week and people write in with the sales in their area. Good Luck!

A. There is no formula with any proven benefits over straight cow's milk. That includes ones with added DHA, with "comfort proteins," etc. "Formula is certainly theoretically more appropriate for babies than cow's milk. But, in fact, there are no clinical studies that show that there is any difference between babies fed cow's milk and those fed formula. Not one." Buy what's cheapest, or what most closely conforms with the WHO code on marketing for breast milk substitutes. There _are_ ways to up your own milk supply... GOING to be? Why would you think your body can make a baby, but not nurse a baby? Some reading: Formula is not risk-free. Is it true that babies get more constipated with Enfamil than with Similac?
Q. My baby has been on many different Enfamil formulas. Enfamil Gentlease has been what he's been on for the past month and a half and it seems to have gotten rid of his extremely bad gas from milk-based formulas. But the problem is that Gentlease seems to make him constipated. I read somewhere online that Enfamil formulas tend to cause babies to be more constipated than Similac formulas. What should I do?
Asked by Nia P - Fri Nov 14 15:51:51 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you should do is give your baby 2-3 oz of water after each feeding ,so that it's not so heavy on his/her tummy because Enfamil formulas, I believe, tend to have more iron. Try it! it worked for me. Good luck!!

Can I switch from Similac to a store brand?
Q. I have a three week old who I have been giving iron fortified similac and it is $22 a container and as a new mom I did not realize those containers did not last long. Is there a store brand equivalent? Is it safe for her for me to switch or do I need to slowly transition into it?
Asked by dewingedfairy - Sun Nov 16 19:00:12 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Store brands are usually the same. The FDA regulates baby formula and they all must adhere to the same guidelines. Some formula's contain more dha or use a different source to get the dha, but otherwise the formula is nutritionally the same. Target brand formula is great. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it and when we need generic formula, wipes or diapers that's what we use. Walmart and Costco will send you samples for a full days worth of their formulas if you request them from the websites. The have gentle and regular formulas. Similac has the least amount of dha or the generic and name brand formulas but we use it and it works great with our little one. When you switch, start mixing a little of the new kind in with the… [cont.]
