Snakes are elongate legless carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes that can be distinguished from legless lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. Like all squamates, snakes are ectothermic amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales. Many species of snakes have skulls with many more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws. In order to accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes' paired organs (such as kidneys) appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Some species retain a pelvic girdle with a pair of vestigial claws on either side of the cloaca.

Living snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica and most islands. Fifteen families are currently recognized comprising 456 genera and over 2,900 species. They range in size from the tiny, 10 cm long thread snake to pythons and anacondas of up to 7.6 metres (25 ft) in length. The recently discovered fossil Titanoboa was 13 metres (43 ft) long. Snakes are thought to have evolved from either burrowing or aquatic lizards during the Cretaceous period (c 150 Ma). The diversity of modern snakes appeared during the Paleocene period (c 66 to 56 Ma).

Most species are non-venomous and those that have venom use it primarily to kill and subdue prey rather than self-defense. Some possess venom potent enough to cause painful injury or death to humans. Those which are non-venomous either swallow prey alive or kill it via constriction.

What snake causes the most deaths in the world?
Q. Doesn't anyone know the top few snakes that cause the most deaths? Or at least the australian snake that causes the most deaths?

A. I'm afraid no one has answered you correctly so far. That is because it's a hard question to answer. Mambas and Kraits are rarely involved with human beings. The Gaboon Viper of South America has the longest fangs of all snakes, and there are many bad Rattlesnakes, and the Sea Snakes have a powerful venom, and the King Brown of Australia is bad news, but these reptiles do NOT usually kill human beings, because either their venom is not that strong or they just don't run across people that often. To my knowledge, the snake responsible for the most human deaths every year is the King Cobra of India. The reason for this, is that, first of all, it has Neurotoxic venom, which attacks the nerves, and second of all, most of the huge… [cont.]

How do we get rid of a snake in our apartment?
Q. This is definitely a first for me. Tonight my husband stopped in to get something from our first floor studio apartment, and as he opened the door he could see a snake coiled up just inside. He turned on the light and got a good look at it. It slithered behind some furniture. A couple other guys went over to help him find it. They tore up all the furniture they could move, but to no avail. We think it came in through a window I left open. Thankfully our landlord is being very cool about this and will cover any expenses to get this resolved. We've determined the breed of snake to be either an Eastern Milk snake (not poisonous) or a Copperhead (poisonous). We have the hotel room for two nights. Both of us are at a loss as to what… [cont.]

A. I am getting nervous just giving you advices on how to get rid of a potentially dangerous copperhead snake. If I was sure that it was a Mike Snake (the harmeless one), I would go to the apartement and clean it out. But since we cant be sure, I would call the exterminator. Its a best bet now. They are trained professionals who knows how to deal with a snake. Guys like us dont see one often and wont know what to do. Since your landlord is financing this, I would go with this approach. It will sure be a drag, but dont take any chances with snakes. They do menacing things when threatened. By the Way, where do you live, maybe it will help determine where its a milk snake or a copperhead.

How did Spielberg make the snake pit scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Q. How did Spielberg film the snake pit scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark? Did they actually walk through the snakes (on top of them), or did they have a sort of path for the actors and stunt doubles to walk on, so they did not step on top of them? Also, were these actually venomous snakes, or were they non-venomous? I know they are actually live snakes, but wondered how they shot the scene without people being bitten and how they got through the snakes without smashing them.
