AntonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical substance called solute to dissolve in a liquid solvent to form a homogeneous solution. The solubility of a substance strongly depends on the used solvent as well as on temperature and pressure. The extent of the solubility of a substance in a specific solvent is measured as the saturation concentration where adding more solute does not increase the concentration of the solution. The solvent is generally a liquid, which can be a pure substance or a mixture. One also speaks of solid solution, but rarely of solution in a gas (see vapour-liquid equilibrium instead) The extent of solubility ranges widely, from infinitely soluble (fully miscible ) such as ethanol in water, to poorly soluble, such as silver chloride in water. The term insoluble is often applied to poorly or very poorly soluble compounds. Under certain conditions the equilibrium solubility can be exceeded to give a so-called supersaturated solution, which is metastable. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the most soluble solute I can get to dissolve it in water? Q. It has to be extremely soluble to dissolve 100% in water, which means that is had to be polar Asked by nico - Thu May 24 00:14:44 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since you don't say if the solute should be liquid or solid, two answers are ethanol and methanol. Both are "miscible" in water, meaning they dissolve in each other in all proportions. That's infinite solubility; it's impossible to be more souble than that. Off the top of my head, the only solid material that I can think of that displays miscibility behavior with water is poly(acrylic acid). Suppose you have a tumor, and you know the tumor is enriched for a particular soluble factor--how do you figure out which cells are secreting the soluble factor? I don't need detailed instructions, just tell me what method to use and I can look up the rest. My background is all in vitro biochemistry, so I'm a bit out of my element here with living cells. The general idea is to use fluorescent or radioactive dyes that can be monitored with imaging systems in vivo. A good example is given by Injections of a radioactive dye for sentinel lymph node identification, by the use of a radiolabeled, low molecular weight dye (e.g., .sup.125I-labeled methylene blue). This radiolabled dye is mixed with an unlabeled, similar molecular weight dye (e.g., isosulfan or methylene blue). The mixture is injected at the time of surgery, and rapidly migrates to reach the lymph nodes in less than 20 min, more preferably in less than 15 min and most preferably in less than 10 min. Q. I know that both methyl alcohol and cannabinol are both alcohols but Can you help me understand why cannabinol is just a little soluble in methyl alcohol at room temperature? Is it a gas at that temperature? Asked by angelic91 - Tue Jan 13 11:36:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Nope most definitely a solid at RT. Take a look at the structure of the compound. It has 3 rings total, two of which are phenyl rings, 3 methyl groups and a pentyl group while there is only one OH. That is a lot of non-polar groups for just one polar group. This is why it is sparingly soluble in MeOH at RT, it really is not a very polar molecule (the general rule of thumb is 5 C's for every polar group for the molecular to be considered polar, this of course is a generalization).
