A. The land route through Panama is not safe. Getting through the Darien Gap can be treacherous and definitely not something to do alone. Sandinista terrorists...The Shining Path... control large areas of the crossings. The law is a knife and a nod from a Sandinista or FARC leader or a local official in league with them. In addition, the terrain itself is hostile, disease-ridden, and a place only for travel-hardened, tough adventurers, aside from some coastal resorts behind barbed-wire fences, constantly patrolled by military and police units to keep the holidaymakers inside safe and cosy who can then go home and boast of their heroic exploits in surviving a fortnight in the Darien Gap! Not a place I would go to, knowing that other people… [cont.]

Is it possible to go to Mexico and South America by boat?
Q. I'm planning to visit Mexico and South America and would like to avoid traveling by airplane if possible. Is there a way to go to these countries by sea? I know there are luxury cruises that go to the Caribbean. I guess I'm thinking of something a bit less frills, just a means of transportation. Haven't found anything so far. Any tips?
Asked by jorgeletoreador - Sun Feb 1 06:24:58 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are a lot of tour boats/cruise ships that go to Mexico and South America: An alternate way is on a freighter. A lot of freighters carry a limited number of passengers as well as cargo. You might try some of them. another way is via a good travel agent that knows the best and cheapest. And one that will work with you to stay in your budget. Usually over all unless you are going there to live and work a good travel agent is the best and cheapest way to go.

A. if you go to peru, don't do it. 60% of buses are poorly maintained. if you are in central america, it is safe. i have been on bus everytime i go to guatemala and el salvador, the streets are in good shape there. and the crime isn't as bad as portrayed on TV. peru and bolivia are the worst countries to take buses in though. they are mountainous countries, if you are in argentina, brazil, or other countries, you are safe, just keep jewelry and electronics concealed. its like riding public transportation here

Where can I find resources about working in Central or South America in social services?
Q. I'd like to spend about 6 months in Central or South America doing social work with Spanish speaking populations. Other than the peace corps, where can I find resources describing what's available and how to apply? Yo hablo el castellano con facilidad.

A. Unless you are a fluent Spanish speaker, with skills that are either transferable to the local population and will help them get employment, or, with skills that are desperately needed in the area, you are probably not going to be able to find a job in Central or South America -- it's much more appropriate for social service organizations to hire local people to do work than to pay someone to come in from another country. That said, you do have some options, if you are willing to pay your airfare, local transporation costs, costs for your security and staff to supervise you, food, etc. Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, and how you can gain that… [cont.]

In South America, in which countries is it safe for Americans to drink the tap water?
Q. In South America, in which countries is it safe for Americans to drink the tap water? Or is it unsafe in all of them?
Asked by cornholio - Thu May 21 17:05:26 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your question is odd. You ask where it's safe for americans to drink tap water in South America. Is there anything wrong with Americans?I'm asking because in my country (Argentina) we drink tap water and so do tourists from anywhere, and no one has gotten sick so far. So I guess our water is not nationality-biased. You can drink tap water safely here; fresh, clear and crystalline tap water. I thought everyone knew that tap water IS drinking water. It's different if you want to drink from a well, for example. But today those are rare even in the countryside. The first guy who answered seems to have taken his *information* from some online guide. I wouldn't trust those. Who knows where that info comes from? Better talk to a person who… [cont.]

A. You will need a VISA for Brazil. Costs $100.00. If you are a US Citizen (others too maybe, I dont know) All you will need is your passport and an onward ticket. Id suggest avoiding NIcaraugua. Its poor, its dangerous, the women are generally not pretty and they are very leftist.

A. Football (soccer) is more than likely the national sport of all of those countries. I can't think of any other that would more popular there. The only country out of them i see playing any other sport is Argentina. They have a very good Rugby team and also have Basketball teams there. But they're no way near as popular as football.

A. I would say it would be easiest to fly there. Roads are not great, it really depends on where you are going though. You can take a cruise depending on where you would like to go, but overall the best way to actually get ther is flying.

Q. The cruises that we've found leave out of South America, but the airfare is too costly.

A. We just did a South America Cruise a few months ago. And when I was searching for cruises I found that YES, there are some cruises that depart from the US going to South America, BUT they are not round trip. SO you have to fly back, which is almost as expensive as flying round trip. Here's one that leaves from San Diego, CA: Here's one that leaves from Ft Lauderdale, Fl: Here's one that leaves from Port Canaveral, Fl: Here's another leaving from Ft Lauderdale: There are some cruises that go both ways, i.e., return to the US from South America. But that would be as expensive as flying round trip AND take twice as long to get back. Then there is another BIG expense in cruises to South America, in addition to the fact… [cont.]

A. The most awe inspiring country is Chile. Land of contrast. The rain forests are cool but it gets old REAL quick when you're camping in the rain and mud, and the sun don't come out for days and when it does you can't enjoy it 'cause the trees block out all the rays. And it's fulla creepy crawly things. Most people who desire to go to a rain forest in S. America would hate it after only 2 days. Chile, on the other hand has much diversity. The wettest and driest two points on the planet are less than 100 miles apart. 20,000ft mountains (the Andes) are within sight while standing at sea level on the beach. The climate is much like California in the northern region. The extreme south is like Alaska. Don't settle for being rained on for your… [cont.]
