In the USA, Special needs is a term used in clinical diagnostic and functional development to describe individuals who require assistance for disabilities that may be medical, mental, or psychological. For instance, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the International Classification of Diseases 9th edition both give guidelines for clinical diagnosis. People with Autism, Down syndrome, dyslexia, blindness, or cystic fibrosis, for example, may be considered to have special needs.

In the UK, Special needs often refers to special needs within an educational context. This is also referred to as special educational needs (SEN).

More narrowly, it is a legal term applying in foster care in the United States, derived from the language in the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997. It is a diagnosis used to classify children as needing "more" services than those children without special needs who are in the foster care system. It is a diagnosis based on behavior, childhood and family history, and is usually made by a health care professional.

What is a good curriculum book for teaching writing to special needs children?
Q. I will be teaching an elementary class next year with kids with special needs, (autism, down syndrom, MR, etc..) We had a meeting today about a good book or anything that can help teach these types of children basic writing skills. Not handwriting, actual sentences. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good thing for this? Thank you for your help!

A. There is a system where you divide a paper into 4 squares with the topic in the middle. Students start off by drawing pictures in the 4 squares and then move to words and simple sentences. For example, a 4 square could have the topic pets and the students would draw an example of 4 different kinds of pets someone could have. They could dictate a sentence to the teacher to write under each picture. This evolves into the student writing their own sentence.

Why would a woman who gave birth to a special needs child decide to start spending more energy on her career?
Q. Help me understand this, because I just don't. I've helped raise a special needs child, and I don't get what would cause someone who just gave birth to one to go "Oh, I think it's time to make a big leap in my career!" I'm sure there has to be some rational explanation. Do any of you have one?

A. I have no clue, children are hard enough, add to that special needs and a "budding" career and you have a neglected child. I know that she has a father and a supportive family but come on, we all know how we feel. I know what that cry means, and when poopie time is. Maybe that's it, she isn't as involved in her child's life to begin with... She was already entrenched in her career when she had the child. She is a little old to be still having babies, so maybe this was an whoopsie baby and she right away got a nanny or nurse for him. She also has some older children so maybe they have taken on a mothering role. That could explain the teen pregnancy, she might be thinking that she is already "Mommy" so what would be the difference to have… [cont.]
