A. Introducing bottles before 6 week is risky enough as far as supply and nipple confusion. To add formula into the mix is really asking for problems. Plus do you honestly know what is in formula? Formulas contain high levels of silicone, aluminum, and some contain MSG! Seriously yuck! Plus all the associated risks. How soon can I start feeding my child formula milk?
Q. How much time does the baby need to be breastfeed until we can start giving it formula milk. Also, IF I start using formula milk, do I use a bottle or a cup (beaker).

A. I have three kids. As far as I know, you can start bottle feeding a baby the day they're born if you really want to. If you are a believer in breastfeeding, but you are afraid the baby might get nipple confusion with a bottle, you may want to look for a a bottle that has a nipple that is more like a breast. I use Playtex Ventaire Natural Shape. You can buy it with nipples that are good for breast fed babies as well as regular bottle nipples. Every kid is different though. Not every kid will easily switch back and forth between bottle and breast. My second child decided that the bottle was faster and weaned at five months. My oldest and youngest however, seemed to have no problem going back and forth. It is always a good idea however to… [cont.]

A few questions about formula and Nestle Good Start as well?
Q. Okay so I have WIC and they only offer Nestle Good Start formulas and they told me I have a choice of Good Start Gentle Plus or Supreme DHA & ARA. What is the difference? I looked online and got no info on the Supreme but plenty on Gentle Plus. Have you used one or the other? Also my daughter is using Similac Advance Shield at the moment so when it's time to switch formulas how should I go about doing that? Thanks in advanced!

A. I would go with the Gentle Plus, I have heard some "horror" stories about the DHA and ARA. Of course online and about the chemicals that are used in it, but I have heard it's best to avoid anything using DHA & ARA including the newer line of baby foods that use it

Does anyone have enfamil or good start formula checks that they would like to trade for huggies coupons?
Q. I have tons of Huggies coupons for diapers, wipes, bath and body, and for any huggies product. I am willing to trade these for formula coupons/checks/vouchers. Thank you.

A. Actually I have 2 / $7.00 checks and 3 /$5.00 checks off any Enfamil formula. Its a shame becuase I just had to switch my baby from the enfamil to similac so I have all these coupons I can't use. I would gladly trade them for huggies coupons. They don't expire until Dec. 31 (one expires Nov. 30). I also have 2 unopened cans of enfamil lipil powder I can't use either.

A. Current recommendations are to mix *all* brands of powdered infant formula shortly before feeding it to the baby. This is because powdered formula is *not* sterile; preparing it in advance allows increased bacterial growth. While it is primarily premature and very young babies who have died as a result of infections from powdered formula, there is always a chance that it could harm an older baby, as well. If you want to prepare bottles in advance, it is preferable to use liquid and not powdered formula.

When does the baby start taking more formula and eating more foods?
Q. Someone told me recently that my son, who just turned 7 months, should start taking less of his formula and eating more foods in the near future. Is this true? I feed him food 2-3 times a day along with his 8 ounce bottles of formula about every 4 hrs. I usually give him about 2 ounces of juice as a snack, too. Is this ok? If I am supposed to give him less formula won't he get dehydrated? I am confused about this.
Asked by lysistrata411 - Wed Jan 2 23:10:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A baby should drink 24 to 32 ounces of formula a day. Starting at around 6 months, when he can sit up, he should start cereal, then fruits and veggies a few weeks later. As you add food he starts to drink less, but it should not be less than 24 ounces or back off a little on solids. Juice should be half juice and half water. By a year he can back off the formula more as he'll be able to eat more food and drink more water.

I'm confused, if breast milk takes about 3 days to start coming in then are most newborns started on formula?
Q. I'm pregnant with my first baby and I read that your breast milk usually takes 3-6 days to start coming in after you have the baby. Is this true? So are most newborns started on formula or what do you do before your breast milk starts coming in? Oh okay thanks ladies. I read about the colostrum, I just didn't realize that would be enough to fill them up. Thanks!

A. before you have "breast milk" you have "colostrum" its a substance very different from milk and very high in immunities almost like a super milk. This colostrum phase is very beneficial to all babies even if the mother chooses formula later. There is more than enough of it to keep a baby happy till the reg. milk comes in. Here is a great article about it:

A. Nestle is good. My son loved it when I was trying to wean last month. And my son was picky with formula. When he was about 6 months, I tried to give him formula so I could sleep a little more at night but he didn't like what I gave him. I used Similac and also tried Infamil. He didn't like either one, so I was surprised he too Carnation good start. If your baby doesn't like Carnation, try other brands. Also, make sure you get the right formula appropriate to your baby's age. As far as gassiness, formula has nothing to do with it. Babies are normally gassy. Some bottles claim they can reduce gas, but it will not eliminate it. Just make sure that when you bottle feed, to burp your baby every 1-2 oz. You don't have to do it as much as your… [cont.]

When should I start buying formula?
Q. My baby will be bottle fed, and I have been told that I should wait until he is born to see what formula they tell me to use. I am wondering if this is true or not, as I would love to start stocking up now. I only have 8 more weeks, last thing I want to do is stop at the store on the way home from the hospital!!
Asked by T J - Fri Jul 27 15:44:24 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My personal opinion I wouldn't stock up because your baby might have reactions the the formula that you buy and then you are just wasting money. When I had my son I wanted to breast feed but I wasn't producing enough milk so I also had to suppliment. Hospitals usually send you home with formula. Doctors and hospitals don't usually tell you what type of formula to use they just suggest the brand / type that they think is best. When I had my son they sent us home with Enfamil but we now use Similac because that is what our Doctor recommended and he does better with it. If your wanting to stock up on anything I would suggest stocking up on diapers and wipes you will go through a ton of them. Good Luck and Congratulations!
