What is the ideal age to for a child to start pre-school?
Q. A lot of people and even some educationists are of the opinion that a child can begin pre-school from age 2. I find this not acceptable. Children in general are inquisitive and eager to learn. That does not mean that they can start pre-school from age 2. I think from age 4 or 5 is a good start.

A. Get them excited about learning! There are tons of lesson plans targeted towards this age group, that you can use to get them used to formal learning.

Should I start my daughter in Pre-School?
Q. She is going to be 4 in April. I have heard from some people that I should definantely start her now, while others say that you only get to be a kid once and starting pre-school takes part of that away because it causes the child to have to be responsible and stuff when they should just be playing. I am so lucky that I get to stay home with her, so I dont have to send her if I dont think she's ready yet. I took her for a few days to a near by pre-school for 3 days just to see how she liked it. She cried so much when I was leaving, it was heartbreaking! I noticed that the other kids didnt cry, even those who were brand new to the school like her. So I dont know if I should give it a couple more months or if I should stick with it. Thanks!

A. I started pre-school when I was 3 and I loved every minute of it.. I was scared at first but I befriended many people, including my best friend who I still talk to today... and I'm almost 20! I cried alot when my mom left too.. every day, every time, I was just an emotional person and I still am, and I remember being afraid that my mom would never come back... stick with it.. you learn so much, and you start learning social skills too! Its great!! It's definitely worth it in the long-run. Think of how many friends she'll be making! Just sit down with her and tell her what time you'll be back and that you'll always come back for her. :-)

what's the difference between "head start" and pre-school?
Q. I've seen "head start" as a program for kids but i'm just curious if it's another name for pre-school.
Asked by The-School.org - Tue Sep 4 12:59:43 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That depends on where you are. Where I used to live, head start was a program for toddlers prior to entering kindergarten, and was actually held at school. They would ride a bus to and from the school. It was also mainly for low income families that couldn't afford pre-school. (my youngest brother was in head start because we were poor when I was younger) In pre-school, my daughter is currently in a pre-school, it is mainly held at a church or other such location. The parents are required to take and pick up their child and it costs a monthly fee. I pay around 200 a month for my daughter to go. It is mainly for ages 2-4/5 depending on what age they start kindergarten. They basically teach the same things, only at the pre-school they… [cont.]

A. Yes she can start preschool, but they do want your child to be potty trained. I'm only stating this because my neice is over 3 and not potty trained and my brother can't put her in preschool yet because of it.

What is the best age to start a child in pre-school?
Q. We are thinking of putting our daughter into pre-school, but I still feel that she is too young. Once school starts it doesnt end for 12-13 years not including college!! Why not give them as many years at home as possible? She will be 4 years old in April. Just want to know what you all think. Thanks!

A. I put my 2 daughters in pre-school both at the age of 4. My oldest had no problems with it. My youngest cried and cried and it broke my heart.. but it got easier after the first week. I am glad that I chose to put her in pre-school because I didnt want her to feel that way for Kindergarten. I too wanted them to stay home as long as possible because once they start.. its 12 years of school, but my husband really wanted them to go. She still had a hard time the first couple of days of Kindergarten in which she started last year.. but I think pre-school helped with the transition. I also think I wanted to hold on a little longer because she was my last too :) Whatever choice you make will be fine. Good Luck :)

A. I also have a late 4 yo (Dec birthday) daughter I teach preschool at home. IMHO the things you should teach before entering a traditional school setting include: Shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, heart, star, oval, octagon, hexagon Colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, brown, white, black and gray Teach writing numbers to 20, recognizing numbers to 30 or higher, counting a set of objects to 10 - start slow here, perhaps even introduce some addition and subtraction concepts using manipulatives. My daughter can tell time to the hour...one day she expressed an interest, she we played games and learned about it. It is important to follow your child's interest. She should also learn the sound each letter makes and… [cont.]

A. To qualify for prep school which is the year before grade 1 the child must be 5 or about to turn 5 in that year. My son is 5 in 2 weeks and he just started prep school a month ago when the new school year began. **I just looked it up and the child must turn 5 on or before june 30th to qualify for prep year.

A. I really don't think there is a "usual" age. Many parents never even put their children in pre-school. Many states offer some kind of "pre-K" program which is for the year before they start kindergarten. I find a lot of parents put their children in a mothers morning out program or something similar for their 1/2/3 yr olds, depending on when the parent feels the child is ready or would benefit from it. I have heard parents say that they put them in at a particular point when they felt the children were bored and longed to spend more time with other kids. Other parent simply put them in pre-school when they feel it's time that the parent needs to go back to work. So I say do it when you feel it's the right time for you and your child!… [cont.]

A. Starting a preschool is a very long and difficult process. Check with your states department of education website. The NAEYC is also a really great resource. I think their website is naeyc.org but search it to make sure.

Please explain how Head Start/Pre School works. My three year old daughter is to begin school next week.?
Q. She is not fully potty trained and is quite disruptive at times. I guess I am asking the patience level of the teachers as her class will have about 20 other kids. Anyone have or had children in pre school to relate their experiences or difficulties?

A. I am a Head Start teacher. We expect these situations, and deal with them all the time. She will probably decide in a hurry to use the potty, because she will be surrounded by her peers, most of whom will be saying I have to go potty, and she'll just naturally say it too! And don't worry about disruptive behavior. That's part of what Head Start is about: learning to follow routines, learning to respect others, learning to listen when appropriate and talk when appropriate, learning good manners, learning self-control. It sounds like you have made an excellent choice in sending her to Head Start! In my area we have an excellent HS program and often have a long waiting list to get in. I hope the program in your area is as good and… [cont.]

How long does it take to adjust to pre-school for 2 yr old?
Q. My 2 year old just started pre-school last week. How long did it take your kids to adjust and enjoy going? This is her first time being separated from mommy & daddy. She cries a lot when she is at school, and is stand-offish towards the teachers/adults. She loves playing with other kids when we go to Gymboree, etc. but is a bit scared of them when she is at school.

A. It depends on what state you live in. Contact you local Child Care Resource and Referral agency. They will give you the contact information for your licensing consultant. Request a copy of the regulations. You may be able to get them off the internet too. Grants in my state are very few I would suggest asking the licensing consultant about that as well.

A. Age 3 is a good time to begin pre-school, once she is potty-trained. Prepare her beforehand by getting her used to being away from you and by getting her excited about this new place where she will make new friends and learn new things. It helps if there is another child in the same preschool with whom your child is already familiar.

A. My son is 2.4 and he has already started preschool for 2 hours once a week. He can count to 20, read his letters and numbers and knows the alphabet. He needed some stimulation in a class environment. He loves it and is never upset when I leave. He was ready. All kids are different, but it sounds like she may benefit from it!
