How do I get started with creative writing?
Q. I have a small background in magazine journalism but my new job requires no writing at all, except for emails. I would like to start doing some creative writing but I don't know where to start, as in, what do I write about, and whether it's actually worth bothering with or not. I'd probably be more inclined to do it if there was a competition or group I could join online or something like that. Does anyone do any writing or their own, if so, how did you get started? And what have you gotten out of it?

A. I was a creative writing major, and some of the exercises they professor gave us were pretty neat. Here are some: - Start with ten individual sentences. From each sentence, create ten more sentences that are connected to it. Afterward, you will have a total of 100 sentences. Believe me, it's a lot harder than it seems. For example, if you start with sentence 1. The house is painted in green. 2. The garden needs weeding, 3, 4, and so on, and I gather that you want to be more creative than those simple sentences. So from that first sentence, 1. The house is painted in green. The following sentence will be 2. The green color resembles the mucus fallen out of Tommy's nostrils as coughed for the fifth time in two minutes. 3. Tommy… [cont.]

How do I get started on a family budget for monthly expenses?
Q. I have a budget plan that I would like to stick to, but I don't know how to go about starting it. Currently we live very paycheck to paycheck and don't have a "cushion" at all. My husband and I are paid every two weeks, on different days. All my bills are due on different days throughout the month. How can I realistically start my budget?? If I have a mortgage and car payments due on the 1st of the month but I am not paid until the 7th or 8th how do I make those payments? I just can't seem to get it started, but I really want to..because it will help out in the long run. We have tons of money that just *disappears* right now and the budget will help. Suggestions??? Thanks!

A. First step in starting a budget is to track your expenses. So, start there. Document every single expense, from mortgage payments to lunches. Once you know where the money is going, you can figure out where it should go. You'll be amazed at where you spend your hard-earned dollars. If you're in immediate financial trouble, consider canceling or reducing some "subscription" costs. Look for a lower cost internet provider. Drop the cable or satellite TV. Look at your phone bill and get rid of the special features. You can live without a cell phone, believe it or not.

I am in Canada BC... if anyone can help me... would you find the sources at like say Chapters??.. I am not sure.. I think I could teach myself to a certain degree, but would need help in some things, like math, I could be okay with other subjects though perhaps.. So how do I get started??? Thanks for your time and effort Blessings!

A. Find out about the regulations where you live, first. You can actually sign up with a school district where you live and they either provide books or give you funds to buy books (I can't remember which). You might also consider seeing about an online program of some sort if you are doing this without much parental help. It would be ideal to find a local homeschooling support group. They will understand the regulations well and will be able to share with you different resources that are popular.

If you want to have no start up cost, it is your best bet. If you have your own website it will cost you to have someone professional design it and to host it. But more importantly, it will cost a lot to advertise your website. Without traffic to your website they will be no sales. It take a lot of advertising to get people to even know your website exists. A. Since you know so little about the canine reproductive cycle, I suggest you have them both fixed immediately. HE knows that NOW is the correct time to breed.

How to get started in a teen acting career?
Q. I am 15, I really want to get started in a teen acting career. I know it's nearly impossible to start on the top. But I was wondering if anyone knew the kind of steps I should take to achieve this dream. And please inform me of how I each step. A. I would keep working in your hometown. Start in Theater, both in your school and community. That is a good way to get expirence. Keep doing that, and maybe take some lessons. These will help you build your resume and prepare to get an agent. After you have done some plays and gotten expirence, start looking on Craigslist and Actors Access for roles. Student films and short films are great. Once you have built up your resume quite a bit, then start the search for an agent. You will need good headshots (google "Actors Headshots for examples), a great resume, and skill. An agent will not take you on if they do not think they can make money off of you. Agents will take ten percent of the money you earn on jobs they book you. They never ask… [cont.]

How do I get started in information technology?
Q. I'm in grade 12 and I want to know what education I need to get into an IT career. I live in Toronto, Canada and there are only 2 Universities (outside the city) that offer a Bachelor of Information Technology. There are three colleges in my area that offer diplomas for Systems Technology, Systems Technician, Information Systems Business Analyst, and Networking. Is it better to get a diploma from college or a degree to get started in information technology? Is there any other way of starting an IT career?

How can I get started with Culinary Arts on the weekends in NY?
Q. I am a successful professional (non-cooking) and I love cooking. I would like to get started in cooking on the weekends in NY - with a chef. How do I go about getting started? Are there hands-on weekend courses where I can take my learning and enthusiasm to the next level? Lots of reference to weekend courses (on-going) would be highly appreciated. Reviews of some of the weekend courses would be tremendously helpful also. Thank you in advance.

A. There are some great opportunities in the direct sales industry. Since cooking demos can be part of your "job duties" you'll be trained regularly in the newest trends, etc.

How can I get started writing a fictional story?
Q. Can anyone please help me on how to get started writing a story? I have all the characters in my head and a rough idea of the plot, but I don't know how to actually start on the book. A. There are whole books out there on how to write a good story; I couldn't possibly fit it all here, but I'll give you some of the basics: In short, a good story has an intriguing beginning, and then a progression of events that follow from one to the other, increasing the tension/danger and drama, until a big climax and satisfying resolution! Avoid stopping the action for long passages of description, especially when it comes to introducing your characters. Many beginning writers tell us everything there is to know about a character at the beginning, when what they should be doing is getting into the action so we can see what the characters are like for ourselves. Reaers like to figure things out for themselves sometimes. Show, don't… [cont.]

How do I get started in selling Real Estate?
Q. I live in North Carolina, and I'm 20 years old. I've always had an interest in Real Estate. And I'm excellent in Math. What do I do to get started? What licenses do I need, and where do I go to get them? And will having that license with 0 experience still get me a job with a company? You have to start somewhere, right? Your help will be appreciated.
Asked by Rev Adam - Thu Jun 19 01:53:48 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will need to get a real estate license. Check out your local Realtor's association for classes. Start making as many professional contacts as you can, and save your money. The licensing fees etc are high!!! Most real estate companies will probably take you on, because you are an independent contractor and you only get paid when a sale is made. It's all commission. Ask around and find the best company for you. In the mean time get some sort of sales job, just so you have some sales experience.

How do you get started in a career as a personal trainer?
Q. I'm asking this question for my boyfriend who is in much better shape than me :). If he wanted to get started as a PT, is it as simple as ordering study materials from the internet and taking the exam? He would like to start his own practice one day but in the meantime work at a major fitness club.
Asked by O e - Wed May 23 13:51:45 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are over 250 certification programs now, so be very careful with shabby organizations which will not properly educate or prepare your boyfriend as qualified personal trainer for most gyms. I've tried many of them and the The National Strength and Conditioning Association is the worldwide authority on strength conditioning specialists and personal trainers. Unlike any other organization, the NSCA brings together a diverse group of professionals from the sport science, athletic, allied health, and fitness industries. I researched it extensively when I was doing my own certifications, and you can't go wrong with the NSCA. Have your boyfriend contact me if he needs more details.

How do I get started in the catering and party planning business?
Q. My friend and I have had a long interest in starting a catering and party planning business. Without taking huge financial risks at this point in time, how does one get started in this business in order for it to lead to a steady part-time or eventually full-time career?

A. Personally I would work part time and learn from a pro, I wouldn`t tell them I was learning. Then go online and look at other restraunts selling details. and also, I saw a forum somewhere with that thread. Do a search on it.

How does one get started with a career in pit orchestra?
Q. I've been playing violin for ~ 9 years, and am starting to have to think about careers seriously. I've always wanted to have a musical career, but neither "rock star" nor "music teacher" will work for me. Pit orchestra, specifically for opera, does seem to be something I'd really like to do. Question: How could I get started with that? I'm just beginning investigation and really don't know anything, so anything you have to say will be helpful! Thanks Very Much <3m

A. These two sites might be helpful to get an overview Occupational Outlook Handbook Career Center - Performance Opera orchestras are tough jobs to get but basically it's all about your audition. Just so you can get an idea of the type of music you would have to play here's a list of music for a job opening for second violin in an opera orchestra in europe click on "Programme concours" (this is a pretty short list too!) Sometimes you have to apply for the job just to see the list! If you want to poke around this is a good spot to do it It's hard work and for most of us it takes some higher education (conservatories universities) and professional experience before we feel prepared to take an audition.

How do I get started with running workouts?
Q. I want to start running. I have asthma and am out of shape. Any tips on getting started?
Asked by Angelia - Sun Sep 28 00:04:29 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, there is a way to get started so you don't give it up. Before you begin a running regimine, practise with riding your bike to strenghten you legs and cardio system. Then move to the running. Otherwise you are likely to say, "screw this". But you may not, I'm not telling you that this is what you will do for sure. I'm just stating what happens most of the time.
