The word student is etymologically derived through Middle English from the Latin second-type conjugation verb studēre, meaning "to direct one's zeal at"; hence a student could be described as "one who directs zeal at a subject". In its widest use, student is used for anyone who is learning.

Australia

In Australia, after Kindergarten or Preschool, children begin primary school, starting with 'grade prep' (in New South Wales the first year is called Kindergarten, and in South Australia the first year is called 'Reception') and continuing 'year one', 'year two' through to 'year six', except in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland, where they go through to 'year seven'. They then move on to secondary school (also known as high school) for 'year seven' ('year eight' in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland) through to 'year twelve'. After year twelve, students may pursue tertiary education at university or TAFE (technical and further education). Children in primary and secondary school are all referred to as students. The term student is used for all learners including primary school, secondary school and university/TAFE.

What is the difference between student/faculty ratio and average number of students per class?
Q. I was looking at college, (I'm a sophomore in high school) and I was looking at some prospective college facts. I saw that in one college, there was a 15/1 student/faculty ratio, but there were an average of 29 students per class. What causes this difference?

A. Departments get to count faculty (total teachers) that sometimes don't actually teach any classes. Some of these are doing research and some are simply advising students but have no course load. By counting these with the faculty that are teaching classes, we can imply that we have smaller classes by saying we have a student:faculty ratio of 15:1 when the average class size might really be 30 students (30:1) because all of our teachers aren't teaching a class. Let's say we have two biology teachers and 60 biology students. Our student:faculty ratio is 60:2 or 30:1 and their average class size will be the same 30 if they're both teaching the same number of students. But, if one of those faculty is in research and doesn't have any… [cont.]

How do you decide whether to let students use the restroom?
Q. This is for high school teachers: do you let students go during class, and how do you determine who goes? I generally let students go one at a time (usually 4 or 5 per class period) if they have not caused any trouble in the room. Some students may just want an excuse to be out of class, while others may have a genuine problem and need to be excused. How do you decide whether it is a trick or legitimate?

When does summer vacation for college students usually start and end in Korea?
Q. Is it like the USA where college students start a bit earlier than elementary/jhs/hs students? How about the teachers/professors?
Asked by Gayaa - Sat Jun 27 01:31:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For the summer vacation, unviersities in S.Korea starts mid or end of June until the end of August. Depending on each year and each university, sometimes it can end until the first week of September. So basically a little more than 2 months. `N unversity students get more vacations than the lower the lower education schools. So for elementary schools the secondary schools, they`re usually from mid July to mid August. As for teachers `n professors I`m not quite sure but I heard they only get a few weeks off in the whole year.
