How open are the Swiss to other religions?
Q. How open are the Swiss with other religious beliefs? I'm an atheist, and personally - it terrifies me to remain in America due to the fact that church and state have the tendancy to not remain seperated. Are the Swiss overall more welcoming towards other beliefs? Or are the Swiss more into keeping their own beliefs, and not welcoming any others? Keep in mind, I'm asking for the majority - I know certain people are different than others. Any information is helpful and appreciated.

A. You see it by the quantity of answers that you get: Religion is nothing that could really interest the Swiss. Or, as Santero said, they are not very religious. So, you'ld definitely be welcome as an atheist in this country.

Can I substitute Swiss for Provolne for this recipe?
Q. This will be my first attempt to make Cordon Bleu. However, the recipe says to make it with Swiss. Thanks to my wonderful hubby, who eats 4-6 cold cut sandwiches again, I ran out. And it's pouring outside. Can I substitute Swiss for Provolone? I know it won't be the same, but will it defeat the purpose of the dish? And if it will defeat the purpose, what other yummy, cheesy, easy-to-make chicken baked recipes can anyone recommend me? Thanks a ton.

How do you investigate whether a Swiss bank is trustworthy?
Q. I Googled "best CD rates in the country" and found a Swiss bank that pays up to 12% for a 5-year CD. How can I investigate whether this is a safe investment?
Asked by itry007 - Sun Feb 11 01:38:01 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Institutes with a Swiss banking license are very trustworthy and professional. Therefore many doubtful offers in the world claim to be Swiss banks although they do not have anything to do with a Swiss bank. Here the web-page of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission where you can find a list of all authorized institutions: 12% for a 5 year CD doesn't sound trustworthy. You must keep in mind that higher interest rates always means higher risk. I bet you won't find the instituiton on the commission list.

What kind of fruit would be good in a swiss roll?
Q. I already have a swiss roll recipe and I've made it quite a few times already. I've only used cubed strawberries and canned peaches for the inside of the roll. Are there any other delicious fruit alternatives that can go in a swiss roll? I'm not much of a fan of jam, I just go with the whipped cream and fruit combo. I can't seem to find anything better than strawberries...Any suggestions?

A. Blueberries (fresh or frozen) have a ton of flavor, are really healthy and are already the right size for a swiss roll. Same for fresh raspberries.

What's the difference between Emmenthaler and Swiss cheese?
Q. From what I understand, Emmenthaler is a superior Swiss cheese from Switzerland and France and is made in part with unpasturzed milk so it's hard to find in the US. Is this true?
Asked by SuzanneSC2 - Fri Sep 21 13:44:02 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Emmental, Emmentaler, Emmenthal, or Emmenthaler is a Swiss cheese. It is sometimes known as Swiss cheese in North America, Australia and New Zealand, although Swiss cheese does not always imply Emmental. The cheese originally comes from the Emme valley in the canton of Bern. Unlike some other cheese varieties, the denomination "Emmental" was not protected ("Emmentaler Switzerland " is, though). Hence, Emmental of other origin, especially from France and Bavaria, is widely available. Even Finland is an exporter of Emmental cheese. Emmental is a yellow, medium-hard cheese, with characteristic large holes. It has a piquant, but not really sharp taste. Three types of bacteria are used in the production of Emmental, Streptococcus thermophilis, [cont.]

How do I open a swiss bank account?
Q. I am interested in hiding some money. Is it possible to open a bank account without having a physical presence in the country? Do they offer any interest rate that would cover the inflation rate of the euro? Is investing in swiss bonds easier? Are there bearer swiss bonds?

A. It is possible to open a swiss bank account without having a physical presence in Switzerland. If you're talking about foreign currency accounts they can do them as competitively as most worldwide banks. However u do need to have a lot of cash to invest in order to open such an account. I think UBS expect an initial investment of upwards of 100k for foreign investments. I may be wrong but if it's hiding money ur after, they will understand this and charge you for this service in one way or another. Check out their respective t & c's. an remember, we pay their wages:)

How is this swiss meal called?
Q. I have forgotten the name for one of my favourites meal I had during my visit in Valais in Switzerland. It is made of one or two thick pieces of local bread moisted with brandy. On top of that goes cheese, sometimes gherkins, slice of tomato, an egg and some herbals. It is than baked in an oven for some time and served very hot with glass of local wine. Anyone can remember the name of it in swiss? English translation is also ok. Thanks for any help.

A. Kaseschnitte, the bread is dipped in Kirsch (which as you say is brandy, but of the cherry variety). Also known as croute au fromage (for which you will find more recipes listed in yahoo). Raclette is a type of cheese or melted cheese, but could fit the bill too aas it is sometimes done with white wine, etc

How do I make mozarella cheese taste like swiss cheese?
Q. I am a vegan and I'm making mushroom tartlets that call for swiss cheese, but the only vegan "cheeses" my store carries are mozarella and cheddar. How can i make the mozarella taste more like swiss or at least make it more flavorful, something that goes with mushroom and green onion in a tart?
Asked by CJ - Sat Apr 11 16:06:16 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can't but you have to learn how to go with (or utilize) what you have. Your mozzarella cheese will be fine if not better. I find that Swiss is a little dry for my taste. Moz goes with just about everything and has a more buttery taste. I think you'll be satisfied with the results. Instead of a Swiss Cheese Mushroom Tart... It will be a Mozzarella Mushroom & Green Onion Tart. Hey get creative! Throw some fresh (small pieces) broccoli flowerets, and red bell pepper for color and texture.

Do you have to use the Swiss fire gel burners for the Montblanc fondue sets?

A. I can only say I have used different types of "canned heat", Sterno, etc, and all work equally well. An enameled cast iron pan might need stronger heat than say, a candle.

How can I take apart a Swiss Army Knife and put it back together?
Q. I got some crud in one of my Swiss Army Knives. It is really bad. I tried some WD40 and a wire brush but some of it I just can't seem to get. I don't see any way to clean it without taking it apart. I was wondering if there were any ideas on how to put it back together without it being absolutely shoddy. Screws or bolts that are non-standard are OK but I'd like to be able to put the plastic housing back on afterwards.

A. Take the knife to a jeweler. Perhaps they have an ultrasonic bath for cleaning jewelry. Even if it cost a small fee, it would be well worth it.
