Switzerland (German: die Schweiz French: la Suisse, Italian: Svizzera, Romansh: Svizra), officially the Swiss Confederation (Confoederatio Helvetica in Latin, hence its ISO country codes CH and CHE), is a federal republic consisting of 26 states named cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities. The country is situated in Central Europe where it is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east.

Switzerland is a landlocked country whose territory is geographically divided between the Jura, the Central Plateau and the Alps; adding together an area of 41,285 km (15,940 sq mi). The Swiss population of approximately 7.8 million people concentrates mostly on the Plateau, where the largest cities are to be found. Among them the two global cities and economic centres of Zürich and Geneva. Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world by per capita gross domestic product, with a nominal per capita GDP of $67,384. Zürich and Geneva have respectively been ranked as having the second and third highest quality of life in the world.

The Swiss Confederation has a long history of neutrality—it has not been in a state of war internationally since 1815—and was one of the last countries to join the United Nations. Switzerland is home to many international organisations, including the World Economic Forum, the Red Cross, the World Trade Organization and the second largest UN office. On the European level it was a founder of the European Free Trade Association and is part of the Schengen Agreement.

Switzerland comprises three main linguistic and cultural regions: German, French, Italian, to which are added the Romansh-speaking valleys. The Swiss therefore do not form a nation in the sense of a common ethnic or linguistic identity. The strong sense of belonging to the country is founded on the common historical background, shared values (federalism, direct democracy, neutrality) and Alpine symbolism. The establishment of the Swiss Confederation is traditionally dated to 1 August 1291; Swiss National Day is celebrated on the anniversary.

How did Switzerland fall under French control in the 1700s?
Q. What I know is that France won a war against Austria and Britain. The Treaty of Campo Formio took Austria out of the war, and declared Napoleon's campaign a success. Italy and Switzerland fell under French control, but why Switzerland?

A. France had been intervening in Swiss affairs well before Napoleon. Earlier in the 18th century France, together with Savoy and Berne, was a guarantor of the aristocratic republican constitution of Geneva, and intervened to uphold it in 1734, 1766 and 1782. When the revolution came along, it was natural that the revolutionaries in Geneva would look to France for help, and they got it. This started a war with Berne in which France also intervened, and which ended in French control of Switzerland, reorganised as the Helvetic Republic

What is it that makes Switzerland's economic, political, and historical landscape so unique?
Q. I often find myself coming across references to the neutrality and singularity of Switzerland's political and economic system. I have never familiarized myself with the country's history and know next to nothing about its current affairs. Please explain those things that set Switzerland apart from most other nations and make the country so frequently worthy of mention.

A. A famous quote from Harry Lime (Orsen Wells), in "The Third Man" "In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

A. It is very difficult to obtain Swiss citizenship by emigration, and it requires first living in Switzerland for at least 12 years and basically becoming "Swiss". From: "People who have been resident in Switzerland for twelve years - the years spent in this country between the completed 10th and 20th years are counted double for this purpose - may apply for naturalisation. Our office examines whether applicants are integrated in the Swiss way of life, are familiar with Swiss customs and traditions, comply with the Swiss rule of law, and do not endanger Switzerland's internal or external security. In particular, this examination is based on cantonal and communal reports. If the requirements provided by federal law are satisfied,… [cont.]

Long before there was a luxury chain of Ritz-Carlton hotels, or a lavish Hotel Ritz in Paris, or even before people started to describe something sumptuous as ritzy, there was Cesar Ritz, the king of hoteliers and the hotelier to kings.
