How do we clean Cartridge tape drives?
Q. How do we clean the head of a tape drive of a tape recorder/player or the cartridge tape driver head of a computer (with cartridge drive)? A radio mechanic cleaned the driver-head with spirit using cotton. Later, the drive worked properly. I heard there are some tapes that clean the drives of a tape recorder/player by running that tape. How is this possible? Also, my computer, printer, modem became dirty. What liquid can I use to clean their body? Is it safe to use any petroliquids?

Do tape together the batts of fiberglass insulation when insulating the wall of a new construction?
Q. If so, what kind of tape do you use- duct tape, carton sealing tape, ??? This is to tape together the paper facing on the insulation where more than one continuous batt is used in a straight line. If it is not taped, air will escape where the two batts meet. This is to tape together the paper facing on the insulation where more than one continuous batt is used in a straight line. A. If you are using batting that has a paper face to it, that tab on each side is used to staple the insulation to the upright studs or horizontal girds (boards turned on their sides and run horizontally). If you are installing insulation and have to piece it together and it has paper on one side, you tape the seams to get a better seal. You can use packing tape but over time it will degrade. Duct tape seems to last a bit longer. If the fiberglass insulation has no paper at all, it is unfaced and has no vapor barrier and does not need taping.

What is an effective way to tape trim when painting?
Q. The last time I painted was a few years ago, and we taped around the baseboards and stuff with regular masking tape and it worked just fine, we hardly had to touch up at all. Then we painted again this weekend, and the tape didn't work at all - we had to spend hours touching up. We used 3M painting tape. Is there a better way to do it? Is there some entirely different method? Is there a type of tape that works better than others?
Asked by andrewdoane - Mon Feb 26 11:46:10 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Using the blue masking tape helps. Run a pen knife or something pointy with which you apply localized pressure along the edge (where trim meets wall). The blue tape has a little wax that melts from the heat generated and seals the edge so you don't have paint leaks. Also, it's wise to remove the paint in 48 hrs of finishing the job. I've had bad experience where the old tape when pulled took paint away along with it.

How do I remove scotch tape from metal?
Q. Where i work people hang posters on the walls of the restroom. When the posters are removed, the tape stays behind. This has lead to there being lots of little strips of tape all over the walls. Not just the adhesive, but the actual piece of tape. I have tried knife blades and razors (did as much damage to the paint as it did in removing the tape), goo gone, paint thinner and soapy water (not at the same time--none of them did a thing) and my fingernails-nothing. Any other ideas?

A. Saturate the areas with De-Solv-It. It will eventually dissolve both the tape and the adhesive. It would be best to remove the tape, at which time you could easily remove the remaining adhesive. It's a bit tricky to get the De-Solv-It to stay on the wall, the reason I suggest removing the tape first. I strongly suggest using a razor scraper to get the tape off so you don't scratch the wall. Then, after you get the whole mess cleaned up, why not hang a bulletin board! De-Solv-It is available at Walmart or most full-line hardware stores for about $4.00 per bottle.

What kind of tape will stick to wax paper?
Q. I've made some energy bars and have them wrapped up in wax paper. I've tried using scotch tape in the past to seal the paper together with poor results. Masking tape? Packaging tape? Something else? You guys rock! Thanks for all the ideas. I've packaged them because I will be bringing them on a backpack trip and the packaging will help keep them from falling apart. The recipe: * Quick rolled oats (toast em if you want, I didn't) * almond butter * 100% cocoa powder * Rice syrup (you could use any liquid sweetener) This is a no-bake recipe, just mix, press and cut into bars or balls.I didn't measure anything, just kept adding and mixing until it was the consistency I wanted. I did use quite a bit of cocoa powder. I kept adding more rice… [cont.]

A. Good for you, making your own energy bars! Bet they are delicious, too. To answer your "sticky" question, it would probably be good to completely run the tape around so it is sticking to itself rather than trying to stick it to the waxed paper. You've already discovered that it doesn't accept tapes very well, so try wrapping the tape all the way around. OR use cling wrap (like saran-wrap) to package your energy bars instead of waxed paper. You could also keep them in an air-tight metal box with only a layer of waxed paper in between the bars to keep them fresh. OR---take them to work and treat your friends and then you won't have to worry about storing them because they'll all be gone! How about sharing your recipe? Hope this helps.

How do I tape a wooden hockey blade for ice hockey?
Q. I have a two-piece composite stick with a wooden blade. How do I tape the blade? How necessary is taping the blade? How frequently do I need to tape the blade? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Asked by E S - Thu Sep 11 01:52:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Start with a strip of tape along the bottom of the blade about 1.5 inches from each end. Fold the edges over onto the front and back of the blade. Press this tape down with a puck on the 3 sides and the 2 corners. Next start taping the stick from heel to toe. Put about 1/2" of tape on the top of the blade on one side. Do a complete wrap back over the 1/2" piece and then start down the blade towards the toe. Have the wraps start and end about 1/4" over-laping the piece on the bottom of the blade. Overlap the tape about 1/4" on each wrap. When you get to the end, make sure you tear the tape at the top and have a 1/2" piece on one side just like how you started. The key to a good tape job is how tight you apply the tape. Put your top two… [cont.]

How do you remove tape from furniture without damaging the finish?
Q. We had movers put some of our wood furniture into storage for several months. When we moved the furniture into our new home, we found that the movers had used 2" clear packing tape to keep drawers from sliding out in transport. When I tried to remove the tape, it either pulled some of the finish off, or left the glue residue. I would like to make the movers lick the tape off, but that option is not available. Anyone have this experience? Any solvents or techniques to salvage my furniture?

A. You can use a hair dryer to soften the glue before you take off the tape. And most babyoil on a cotton ball will dissolve tape goo without doing any damage.

A. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything on the web about that specifically-named item, but, other than just going to BB&B and asking them, I would speculate that it might be a sliding panel, such that the entire base or side slides out to reveal an openning for the tape.

How can I get tape off my car without hurting the paint?
Q. Its clear packing-like tape that has been holding the window up until I can get it fixed. The tape is cracking and seems to have molded itself right onto the car. I need to get it off with out harming the paint one tiny bit. The tape goes all the way around the window area. Just an update, I have heard of Goo Gone, but I also heard it might harm the paint. Is there a special technique to use when using this product?

What is the best way to tape an adult diaper on?
Q. I have seen ones with 2 tapes and 3 tapes on either side. Some show them all going parallel. Others show the bottom tape pointing down toward the ground. Any personal success or failure stories?
Asked by Sean - Wed Dec 31 17:53:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. From my experience, it's best to use the bottom tape to attain a very tight seal around the leg. Pull the leg cuff around your upper leg so you reduce any slack and then put the bottom tape right near the bottom of that area, right above your skin. That will create a nice, tight seal which will prevent leakage. Putting them all parallel could cause a gap to form which could give leakage.

A. Maybe painters tape. Ask her to search with you of what you can use. Tacks? They'll leave small pin holes easy to fill and if you have any extra paint, not hard to cover. Roxanne

Q. I used some white wide tape that really works well where can i buy it?
Asked by scarlet - Sun Sep 16 00:58:51 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will want a tape that stays put when you want it too but come off easily when you need to. I was told at a camera store that the blue tape that painters use works really well. It doesnt leave a residue like duct tape and will stick when you want it too and come off the same. This is a temporary fix and you should get that hinge on your camera fixed eventually. I'm sure you know at least one handyman type person.

A. Warm the tape with a hair dryer. This will aid in releasing the adhesive the tape has made a bond with. Do not leave the hair dryer on to long since it could cause the paint to bubble.
