what are some good classroom teaching resources?
Q. I'm doing a teaching session on violence, policing, and control. I need to find some engaging classroom activities that i could use to teach about these topics. I'm hoping to be able to do something that can get the students involved as opposed to merely lecturing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A. Four suggestions: First, check out the required curriculum/standards, and get up to speed on that. For example, does the school have a required math program? Everyday Math, for example, is a fast paced, totally different hands on approach and you would benefit from specific training in that area. Also, if you know that you will have GATE or Twice exceptional children in the class, look for a book, class, or workshop on "differentiaited instruction", and multiple intelligence theory. If you know that there will be ELL learners, then get geared up for those students. Second, ask the kids what they want to learn, what they are learning, and what they have learned. Keep them involved. A general suggestion would be to interview or survey… [cont.]

Where can I find resources on teaching special education classes?
Q. I'll start teaching in the fall, but won't start my internship program for awhile. I've worked with special ed kids before, but never taught my own class. I know it's elementary age group and they're all different levels of autism. Can anyone point me in good directions for making lesson plans with different levels? Thanks!

A. hopefully you will have one-on-one aids for some of your students. most importantly, make a schedule, make it visible and easy to understand. stick to the same schedule every day. if there is going to be a change for a field trip or assembly, start preparing the students the week before by telling them what will be happening. every student with autism in our school has an individual schedule that provides for his or her needs such as one-on-one time with the aid and teacher, one-on-one with just the aid, planned breaks, speech, OT, PT... find out about PECS (picture exchance communication system) and boardmaker (a type of software). boardmaker will help you make PECS binders for your students. many schools have it or are willing to… [cont.]

A. I think Rosetta Stone has been consistently rated as one of the best. Here's their website: If you want a less expensive option, Power Glide is also well-rated. Here's another that was well-rated by the Old Schoolhouse Magazine: Here's something else I found, some free on-line lessons. I haven't used this, but it might be helpful

What are some good resources for teaching yourself Italian?
Q. Books or sites than basically work as a textbook that you would use at school... I've heard of Rosetta Stone, but I've heard from so many people that it doesn't work... And I'd rather learn Italian the way I've been learning French and Spanish at school, since I already know that works really well for me. =) I'm 15 though, so nothing too expensive, even though my mom agreed to help me pay for anything I need. Thank you!

Are there any good resources for teaching children logic and reasoning?
Q. Please nothing involved or attached to christianity, I want pure logical reasoning steps and methodical reasoning. Too many of those home-school sites are scary as they are so slanted and fallacious in their arguments in order to produce children that believe the arguments for their religion.

What are some good ESL teaching materials for working with the poor village setting with few resources?
Q. I have been teaching English at a cram school in Asia for a year and am now going to Latin America to work in a poor village. The materials I now use are good but copyrighted by the school, so I can't take them. I am also used to having a library of resources. Now, I won't have a photocopier and probably won't be able to bring in a lot of resources, (definitely not one per student) so I am looking for good books and materials out of which I can get plenty of mileage.

Where are some good places to find resources for teaching regrouping, addition, and subtraction?
Q. For a second grader
Asked by Willalee - Mon Feb 18 19:40:31 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We started with homemade resources. We took beans and popsicle sticks. Glue 10 beans to each popsicle stick; these "bean sticks" stand for 10's while individual beans stand for 1's. So for the number 40, use 4 bean sticks. For the number 53, use 5 bean sticks and 3 individual beans. To do addition, take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. Label the left side "tens" and the right side "ones." Have the child then use the beans and bean sticks to show the problem. Any time he ends up with ten or more beans in the ones column, he should trade (or regroup) 10 beans for a bean stick. We did this first, with just the beans. Then with numbers and beans, until my child didn't want to bother with the beans anymore. By that… [cont.]

Some Teaching Resources Ideas?
Q. Just wondering if some experienced teachers could give me some ideas of resources to start collecting (im still studying teaching - primary and early childhood). I don't mean like crayons and pencils and things, but like dress-ups, dolls and other dramatic play things - should i be gathering these kinds of things for my classroom?

A. i would suggest items that aren't normally furnished in a classroom: large easel books flannel story sets science items (microscope, magnifying glasses, bug collection boxes) special, seasonal story books (holidays, etc) dress up items (clip on earrings, large bead necklaces, hats, scarves) large grip pencils (for early writers. the big, round ones. i always cut them in half and that doubles your quantity. it is also easier for the little writers to grasp) bulletin board boarders (dollar tree)

A. Here's one that I like: and here's another one: and one more: This one is part of preschooleducation.com but is Christian focused: Are you going to be teaching a preschool class? Be careful about using too many pre-printed things. Preschoolers need to be creative most of the time. Nothing wrong with learning to color inside the lines, but they do need to just color, cut, and glue without working on a structured project sometimes, too!
