What are the different techniques from an electric to an acoustic bass guitar?
Q. I've been playin electric bass for about four years now. I know the in and outs of a bass and lookin to broaden my knowledge and experience. I've been recently wanting to get an acoustic bass, but I wasn't quite sure if the techniques were the same from an electric to an acoustic bass. Is the techniques greatly different, and if so, what are the differences to play the acoustic?

A. The main techniques (fingerstyle and plectrum) are pretty much the same but there are a few techniques which are more limited - particularly slap bass. Because the sound of an acoustic bass is created through resonance and vibration of the body (rather than mostly a magnetic intereaction between the strings and pickups) the thud of the thumb striking the string/fretboard is amplified to a much greater extent with an acoustic bass. Similarly the pluck/pop sounds are dominated by the metallic sound of the string striking the frets. Also, you might find that playing an acoustic requires a rather more disciplined left hand technique as buzzes from sloppy fretting are also more obvious. What are some techniques for staying calm during an oral presentation?
Q. It's almost impossible for me to remain calm when giving an oral presentation. Even if I work on calming myself prior to the presentation, it doesn't help. As soon as I step in front of the class, my heart starts pounding, I start swallowing uncontrollably every 5 seconds, my mouth gets bone dry, and I run out of breath and am not able to finish a sentence without sounding like I'm gasping for air. What can I do?? Are there any miraculous techniques? Should I take some sort of medication before the presentation? Please help!

A. Try to memorize your presentations as best as possible so that you don't have to worry about knowing what to say. Then if you have a friend in class just look at them during your presentation, and every so often fake scan the room by looking above peoples heads then return to your friend. If you don't have a friend of yours in a class you have to give a presentation then ask someone in the class that you feel comfortable with or trust so that you can look at them during your presentation and fake scan the room. Just try to act like you are practicing in front of your friend or the person that you trust instead of the whole school. What are some techniques for making homemade mashed potatoes?
Q. I want to be a chef when I am older so once a month I get to cook a humungous feast for my entire family. Well, what ever it is we always have mashed taters! My turn out fine, but my grandma's are so much better. What are some techniques you all use in making mashed taters?

A. I peel the potato's first, cut them into quarters, (make sure they are near the same in size for even cooking) boil until done..drain..put the pot back on the stove, add milk, butter, salt, pepper (and some shredded cheddar of you like it). I use a mixer so I don't get lumps. During the holidays, my family also mashes turnips in with the potato's, sounds gross but its great. You can also bake a few potato's, save the skins (cut tator in half length wise) and put your mixture of mashed inside, top with shredded cheese and chopped bacon and serve with sour cream. (put the sour cream in a bowl sprinkled with chopped chives..yummy) Try to find a "yellow" variety of potatoe for mashing, best taste)
