Singular testament

Plural testaments

testament (plural testaments)

  1. (law) A solemn, authentic instrument in writing, by which a person declares his or her will as to disposal of his or her inheritance (estate and effects) after his or her death, benefiting specified heir(s).
Note: This is otherwise called a will, and sometimes a last will and testament. A testament, to be valid, must conform in most states to applicable legal rules, which may include: be made by a person of sound mind; and be executed and published in due form of law. In certain cases one may make a valid will by word of mouth only. See {Nuncupative will}, under {nuncupative}.
  2. One of the two distinct revelations of the Judeo-Christian God's purposes toward man; a covenant; also, one of the two general divisions of the canonical books of the Biblical Scriptures, in which the covenants are respectively revealed: the Old Testament and the New Testament; -- often limited, in colloquial language, to the latter.
He is the mediator of the new testament ... for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament. --Heb. IX. 15.
  3. A tangible proof or tribute.
  4. A credo, expression of conviction

What are the differences between the Old Testament and the Jewish Tanakh?
Q. What are the differences between the Old Testament and the Jewish Tanakh? Are they the same? Do Jews follow the Old Testament, and the first 5 books of the OT are the Jewish Tanakh If there is a difference, what is it?
Asked by Love Allah THE REAL ONE - Sun Dec 28 13:19:08 2008 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The Tanakh is the entire Old Testament. Of course, they don't call it the O.T., as that would imply there's also a New Testament, and they don't believe in that, or in Jesus as the Messiah. The books are arranged in different order in the Tanakh, and the English is a little different. If you get a Hebrew/English Tanakh, then the Hebrew is on one side of the page and English is on the other. Also, Hebrew is written backwards, from right to left. The first five books of the Tanakh are called the Torah and are read in the synagogue worship services. Basically the Jews only know something about the Torah. They know very little about any of the other books.

A. The "Eternal Order" is mentioned all over the OT; you just have to keep in mind that the glimpses are brief. Here are a few examples: 1) compare what Revelation 21 and 22 says about the sun, moon and stars with Isaiah 60: 19 The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory. 20 Your sun shall no longer go down, Nor shall your moon withdraw itself; For the LORD will be your everlasting light, And the days of your mourning shall be ended. 2) compare what Rev. 22:3 says with these passages: a) Isaiah 25:8 He will swallow up death forever, And the Lord GOD will wipe away tears… [cont.]

What is different from the Tanakh and the Old Testament?
Q. Was all the Tanakh completed before any books in the New Testament or was their additions after? If there is a difference then, What books are left out of the OT? And why were they left out?
Asked by jayB - Thu May 28 19:20:09 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. answer: Difference in order of books, chapter breaks and there are translation/interpretatio n differences. The Tanakh was completed before the NT was written down. The books left out of the Tanakh were the same ones that the Protestant Christians leave out of their OT. Sometimes a single word or phrase is mistranslated from the Hebrew; look at how it completely alters the meaning of the text though: Zechariah 12:10 The Hebrew Tanakh: and they shall look upon me whom they have stabbed/ thrust through [with swords ) The King James Version of Zechariah changes one word [stabbed] to pierced. Isaiah 7:14 The Hebrew Tanakh says Therefore, the Lord, of His own, shall give you a sign; behold, the young woman (alma) is with child,… [cont.]
