What theory of child development do you disagree with?
Q. I apologize but I haven't been in school for 10+ years and this is my first question to my ECE class. I'm not asking for any answers, I would just like to know what theory of child development do you agree/disagree with. I started writing my homework and then realized that it wasn't based on early theories of development, so my first paper in 10+ years went down the tubes. I appreciate all discussion. Thank you.

A. hmm I disagree with Sigmund Freud's theory of Oedipal complex. I don't believe a son of both parents would kill his own father for his mother. You should look up Sigmund Freud ideas and some psychologists like him.

Q. I am a 17 year old high school student who is planning on majoring in music in college. I understand I will have to take a LOT of music theory classes. However, I do not have a music theory class available at my high school. Does anyone know a workbook or something so that I can try to teach myself (with help from my band and choir directors) about music theory? Thank you for your help!

It's sooo helpful. You will know pretty much everything you'll need for college. You'll need a little help understanding, but it explains how to do everything in the book.

How much music theory knowledge is necessary to study medieval music?
Q. I'm enrolled for a course called History of Medieval Music. I've had AP theory in high school, but quite a few of the people in the class are music majors who have had advanced theory. Is medieval music complicated stuff or what?

A. I agree with Delicio - the interwoven lines of medieval music are often functioning on a level that one does not appreciate without a decent background. Tell you what - get yourself a copy of Gradus ad Parnassum by FUX (that is pronounced FOOKS, so you do not get into trouble. Betcha that Yahoo *cleans up* the spelling!). It is the book that Mozart's teacher used to teach HIM - and countless thousands of other have learned from it. IT goes through the forms of *species counterpoint* - how melodies are built to weave around each other - in a Master and Pupil dialogue. Yes, it can be dry - but see how much of it you can comprehend on your own. If you have a sense of "Ah, Little Grasshopper, see if you can take the cola nuts from my… [cont.]

What is a conspiracy theory good enough for me to write about in a research paper?
Q. I have to write ten pages on a conspiracy theory. Since I refuse to write about something as played out as the moon landing, arae 51, or jfk's assassination (and those topics have already been chosen by other classmates) I need to find an original theory. There has to be information on the subject, hence the term research paper. Also, scientific ideas are ideal, but any creative idea is welcome!

A. Hopefully a better answer will come along, But what I remember was that string theory believes energy goes in strings, whereas M theory believes it's in bubbles. And possibly M theory has more dimensions. And M theory has the ability to posit what was before our universe. I believe by means of incorporating the alternate-universes theory.

Can Game Theory be applied in the 2010 UK General Election when deciding between Labour and The Conservatives?
Q. Game theory is, briefly, the idea that two options are presented to a decision-maker. One option is higher risk because it could either be a lot better than the second option or a lot worse. Whereas the second option is the safer option because it does not offer the worst outcome but at the same time does not offer the best possible outcome.

How many people trust the theory of wormholes enough to test it?
Q. The theory is that wormholes are links between universes. As you are drawn towards a black hole you are broken into molecules and forever fall inwards. For every force there is an equal and opposite force so the theory suggests you travel through a wormhole and forever expand on the other side in another universe. However, it is possible that in another universe the phisics of our bodies would be too different and you would cease to exist. Your thoughts?
Asked by ME - Wed May 28 07:04:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Scientists studying black holes can see that they suck up matter like there is no tomorrow. Long before one would even enter the black hole we would be ripped up to shreds. Heck, even planets are destroyed and sucked up very easily. The black hole would have to be very very very small, like not much bigger than a person, for me to take that chance and then I might for the sake of science. Heck, if Jodie Foster can survive a wormhole in the movie "Contact," then so can I. Beem me up Scotty!

Does a theory need to explain everything before it counts as having explained anything?
Q. Isn't that the way a healthy theory behaves? Going from the general --with gaps-- towards the particular? The gaps in the theory of evolution are a good sign, mostly if we have observed we've filled in many of them satisfactorily. Does a theory need to explain everything before it counts as having explained anything?

A. A hypothesis go through rigorous testing and criticism before being classified as theory. In science theory is the highest status an idea can have, it is an idea backed up by almost 100%. And it has to fit data, tested, occur, and a lot more. It goes through things that Creationism and other myth can't even pass the slightest.

How does Chaos theory make weather prediction more difficult?
Q. I mean is, I read today that it makes weather predication more difficult the further into the future U go with it. How does Chaos theory suppose to work in a system like our atmosphere?
Asked by why not? - Sat Apr 19 22:54:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The way weather is forecast these days involves solving complicated mathematical equations. The solutions starts with initial conditions that are derived from measurements all over the world. Chaos theory says that if you make any sort of error at all in these measurements, then when you solve the equations starting with these errors, they will get larger and larger the further you forecast into the future. Once you get about 3 weeks or so into the future, the errors become so large that the forecasts are completely useless. Researchers have found a way around this problem, at least a little bit, by purposely adding a variety of errors to the initial conditions and then running the models many times starting with all those errors, that… [cont.]

Asked by wtws? - Sat Mar 7 04:11:26 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd say rather that a theory is the coherent explanation of a collection of scientific discoveries. Mendel's laws, the find that mutations occur, Darwin's own studies on the Galapagos islands, different fossils from different geological periods: those were the discoveries. Darwin's evolution theory gave all these facts a solid theoretical basis.
