Qualifications for Delta Sigma Theta alumnae chapters?
Q. I am interested in becoming a member of one of my local alumnae chapters of Delta Sigma Theta. I did look at the minimum requirements listed on the website. I am currently pursuing a Masters degree but I am not sure if I will obtain my degree when the rush meeting is held. Would the gpa requirement be based on my cumulative including my masters program courses and undergrad or just my undergrad degree?
Asked by Tina Marie - Thu Jun 4 03:11:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The GPA requirement will be based on your undergraduate degree only. If you complete your Masters the GPA requirement will automatically be met because of course you must have a 3.0 to obtain a Master's degree. They will not consider your undergraduate GPA as part of the GPA requirement, but remember you must get the majority vote of the chapter. They will not look at any of the courses that you have taken for your Master's program. Please keep in mind that the GPA requirement has been raised to 2.75 as of January 2009. I make that note because they way you are asking your question leads me to believe that you may not have the minimum required GPA. If you don't just wait until you complete your Master's degree. However, be mindful that… [cont.]

I can't get in contact with an alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, what should I do?
Q. I'm interested in joining an alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. I've visited their website and I saw a phone number. Everytime I call, it goes straight to voicemail. I've also e-mailed them and haven't gotten a response. I'm moving to the city of the chapter in the fall, I don't know anyone and I have no way to contact them. Any ideas on what should I do?
Asked by caramelmami210 - Thu May 1 12:32:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You sound as if you are pressed for time, or have an urgent need to get in touch with the chapter for some reason. I'm sure you don't want to appear as if you are "stalking" the members, so why not concentrate on moving in and getting settled in your new area? You never know when you may run into a member while you are out in town, in the community, attending church, etc. Also, be aware that the chapter is busy, and will be wrapping up activities very soon since the summer is approaching. If they normally update their website, then just keep checking for them to post events in the fall when programming resumes.

Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter MIP?
Q. I know that it does happen, but is it likely for a graduate chapter of DST to have intake in the fall? Also, why is it that most alumnae chapters have spring intake oppose to fall?
Asked by Denise W - Mon Apr 28 18:34:49 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, it is likely that a graduate chapter of DST will have intake in the fall/winter/ and spring. You have to understand that graduate chapter of Delta is ran differently than undergrad. For one point, they have to do what's works best with the chapter, and their individual schedules. In undergrad, sorors only have to focus on school, and some worked part time jobs. For grad there are lot of factors from families, full time jobs, etc.. Also I want to point out that most alumnae chapters do not have spring intake oppose to fall. I know plenty of chapters have intake in the fall, as well as the spring. Once again, it all goes back to what works best for the chapter.

Is Undergraduate GPA an issue when applying for membership in Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter?

Should I just retake courses that I took when I was a young adult to raise my GPA ? By the way, I'm active in volunteering in my community as well, but I'm concerned that the poor grades I received as a young adult may be a hindrance. A. Hello there, I'm really hoping that you didn't mean you've been emailing and waiting idly by for a response for the past four years! Although both chapters have websites, don't think that your message wasn't received just because you didn't receive a response. In the meantime, a better way to express your interest in joining the Sorority might be to attend any public events that are held, and get to know the members. Since you are in the area, remaining actively involved in community service will likely cause you to cross paths with my Sorors members as well. You never know, there may be members from surrounding chapters at your church, place of business, or other venues. (Although, I have to admit that I wouldn't suggest approaching them… [cont.]

Joining Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae...?
Q. During my undergrad experience, I was unable to pledge b/c the chapter was suspended. I have graduated and would like to join the Alumnae chapter in my area. I have spoken to one of the members and have even went to one of the events. My question is, how do I spark conversation at party when everyone is trying to enjoy themselves? Or at a church function that DST Alum is throwing? I am just confused in those types of settings, how can one stand out and hold conversation?

A. Hi there, The best advice that I can give you is to be yourself. I know that seems kind of vague, but trust me it works. I would start by either complementing them on the event, if you are having a great time, or if you've learned something from the event, then tell them that. You can also ask them about future events that they may be hosting, or if they have a mailing list that you can add your info so they can keep you in the know as to what's coming up in the chapter. You can also ask if they need any help or volunteers at any community service projects they may have coming up. If you are at an event where you it's more of an open forum type thing, then I would participate, and add to the conversation. I guess in a nutshell it… [cont.]

Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter in Neighboring City?
Q. The alumnae chapter in my city is considering having intake as early as 2009. There is a chapter in a neighboring city having rush in January. Many of my friends and coworkers that are members of other organizations tell me to just get a mailbox in that city and it will be enough. They tell me that people use P.O. Boxes and mailboxes all the time when they want to get into a chapter in a city they do not live in. This seems a little shady to me because I think I would have to show some proof, other than a mailbox address, that I live in that city(which I don't). Is it true that just a P.O. Moving to Another Service Area for Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Membership Intake?
Q. Posting here too... not sure what category this falls under. I'm extremely interested in pursuing membership into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I live in an area with multiple chapters close together but technically different service areas. For example two chapters are only 5 minutes away but are considered another service area. I'm only interested in two chapters, the one in my service area and a different one. The chapter in my service area held a Rush recently but I was unable to attend. Since grad chapter intake happens so infrequently would it be okay for me to move to the other service area if the other chapter I was interested in holds a Rush? Any info or comments are appreciated.

A. Hi there, As long as you reside within the service area, then you can apply for membership through that particular chapter. As far as MOVING to another service area JUST to pledge Delta, I think that's a bit extreme, but if that's what will make you happy, then go for it. I would however check to see if both chapters fall into your service area, and if it does, then you should be able to apply. Good luck to you!

This is and excellent tool to use to find out if they have a mailing list you can join *I know some chapters have this option available on their website* as well as a calender where you can find out upcoming events. This is an excellent way for my sorors to get to know you,and for you to get to know them. It won't be necessary RUDE fro you to send an email displaying your interests, but as my soror stated, some sorors frown upon this. By showing up to different events, and volunteering for community service projects...TRUST ME,,my sorors will know that you are interested especially after they see you attend the Rush. A. Hi there, If you are applying for membership WHILE you are in grad school you will have to use your undergraduate gpa. However if you apply for membership AFTER you graduate from grad school, then your undergrad gpa no longer applies.

What steps can I take to join Delta Sigma Theta Inc.?
Q. I am interested in becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. I am interested in joining the alumnae chapter in my hometown. However, I am currently outside of the U.S. and I wanted to know what could I do while working outside of the U.S. to help further this endeavor? I plan to move back home in about a year and a half. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

A. Hi there! I agree with everything my soror dablest1 has said already. I just want to add that we are an international organization and that we may have a chapter in the country that you are currently living in. There are chapters in Japan, The UK ,Germany, The Bahamas, Jamaica and many other countries that are active . If there is a chapter where you are ( most of them have websites) try finding out when they are having events so you can get to know the women. If you happen to be in a country where there is no chapter you can try contacting the ladies in the chapter in your hometown to express your interest so that they can know you when you return home to the US. Also if possible you can do community service where you are. This will… [cont.]

Question about joining Delta Sigma Theta?
Q. I started the process of DST, but due to some unfortunate circumstances at home was unable to finish. Will this affect me if I am interested in an alumnae chapter?

A. That would depend on what those circumstances were and if the process you were engaged in previously was a legal one sanctioned by the Sorority. For now, I cannot think of a reason that you should feel compelled to share this with anyone - if you are interested in an Alumnae chapter, by all means make sure that your credentials are in order, and get to know the members by supporting their programming and events. If/when that chapter decides to have intake, then I would encourage you to keep any information regarding your previous process to yourself and only disclose it to the appropriate persons, and in the appropriate manner (you'll recognize these when the time comes). Good luck!

Pledging Alumae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc?
Q. I currently attend an HBCU where the chapter has been and will continue to be suspended until I graduate. I have currently been looking into pledging a city chapter or an alumnae chapter, however, I'm not very certain of the process. I know the pledging process is very secret so I'm not expecting much information, but can someone please let me know how I can go about pledging a city or alumnae chapter for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority?

A. When joining an alumnae chapter, you are only able to join one that is close to where you reside. If you already know where you will be residing after graduation, then I would suggest that you visit our national website, and go the region section. There you will find websites to different alumnae chapters. On various websites, my sorors will list upcoming events, and some even have a place where you can join a mailing list that will keep you updated on upcoming events, including Rush/Informational. Once you know which alumnae chapter that you are able to join, (possibly) I would attend their events, get to know them and more importantly allow them to get to know you. I say this because even if you meet the qualifications of joining, you… [cont.]
