A toilet is a plumbing fixture and disposal system primarily intended for the disposal of the bodily wastes: urine and fecal matter. Additionally, vomit and menstrual waste are sometimes disposed of in toilets in Western societies. The word toilet describes the fixture and, especially in British English, the room containing the fixture. In Canadian English, the latter is euphemistically called a washroom; in American English, a restroom or bathroom. The latter term often describes a room that also contains a bath tub. A room with only a toilet and a sink is sometimes called a half-bathroom, a half bath, and a powder room.

There are two basic types of modern toilets: the dry toilet and the wet toilet, the latter being the most commonly known and producer of blackwater. The dry toilet needs no plumbing for water input or evacuation, but is often coupled with some ventilation system.

Prior to the introduction of modern flush toilets, most human waste disposal took place outdoors in outhouses and latrines. However, the ancient cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, e.g., Harappa and Mohenjo-daro which are located in present day India and Pakistan had flush toilets attached to a sophisticated sewage system—and other forms of toilets were used both in the time of the Romans and Egyptians as well. Although a precursor to the modern flush toilet system was designed in 1596 by John Harington, the toilet did not enter into widespread use until the late nineteenth century, when it was adopted in English upper class residences.

Can a toilet get clogged later on?
Q. I am so swift. I somehow managed to fumble the cap of my roll-on deodorant right after I had flushed the toilet. It went in and disappeared in a split second. The toilet flushes fine now. Does that mean it got through ok, or is it going to cause a backup further down the line? I am on city water. . I would like to hear from someone who has fixed their own toilet more than once.

A. Hi. The drain on a toilet is the bottleneck (pun intended). Anything that passes through that should reach the end of the pipe.

A. Much work.. You would have to tear out the concrete to the area where you want the toilet to go.. and part of the outside wall and then dig down to the outlet pipe on the outside and inside of the house.. and add a connection to the new location. It is NOT going to be easy.. believe me

How do I get water faucets to run after toilet water was shut off for several hours?
Q. Our toilets upstairs overflowed. The water line for the toilet was shut off for about 3.5 hours. The water throughout the house now is extremely low. The water valve on the toilet is back on and the toilet flushes. The water worked upstairs, but now it doesn't flow more than a trickle out of any faucet. How do I get the water flow back through the faucets?

A. your valve to your toilet should of not affected the rest of your home - i would check the main valve at the water meter to ensure it is open fully...if it is, you migt have an obstruction in your line or a bad water pressure regulator to your home
