A broad definition of a tool is an entity used to interface between two or more domains that facilitates more effective action of one domain upon the other. The most basic tools are simple machines. For example, a crowbar simply functions as a lever. The further out from the pivot point, the more force is transmitted along the lever. Most anthropologists believe that the use of tools was an important step in the evolution of mankind. A pair of slip-joint ChannelLocks that will open to at least 1 1/2" (one-and-a-half-inches) to remove the water line from under the toilet AFTER you turn off the water at the shutoff valve (also called the 'angle stop') on the wall and to remove the bigger nylon nut under the toilet that holds the fill valve in place. And a knife to cut the little black overflow-tube hose. Have a bucket and rags handy. When installing the new fill valve, get everything hand-tight, then use the ChannelLocks to tighten it a little bit more. Reattach the water supply line to the toilet, turn the wall valve on SLOWLY and then flush the toilet after it fills, checking for function and for leaks. First, tape off the trim. There is a paper/tape combination you can use. It's about 5" wide, and one edge is adhesive. Tape along the top of the base where it meets the wall, and let it drape down over the baseboards. For door and window casing, use 1-1/2" or 2" wide blue painters tape. Use that also to tape around your light fixture. For tools, you will need a 2-1/2" sash brush (the angled bottom type), a roller with 2 sleeves-one for the ceiling, one for the walls. If the walls and ceiling are he same color, you only need one. A 4" roller and handle will also come in handy. Q. We have mostly weeds, and want to plant a lot of grass seeds, to try to crowd out the weeds. We probably need to dethatch, aerate, etc., then plant the seeds, then water frequently till the seeds sprout, and probably mow frequently to keep the weeds from growing back. We have a mower but nothing to dethatch or aerate or anything. We've heard of a power rake but don't know where to rent one or how to use it. You find them listed. A power rake or dethatcher removes the thatch layer on the soil surface. Check first that you have it, cut a core down into the ground and pull out the plug with the soil. Thatch is the layer on top of the soil. If it's more than 1/2 inch, dethatch. Power rakes have a rotating drum with tines that whirl down to the soil line kicking up the dead thatch but leaving the living grass (hopefully) You don't want to plow up your lawn, just barely touch the ground. Then you have this mountain of dead stuff you have to rake up and dispose. Aeration pokes holes or cuts slices in the soil allowing oxygen to penetrate.
