Where can I mount my trolling motor on a closed bow boat?
Q. I have a 16'6" foot boat with a closed bow. There is a hand operated trolling motor mounted to the transom and I have a 50 hp motor there to. It is kinda tight with both of them there and I want to put a trolling motor with autopilot somewhere on the boat. Where is a good place to mount this new motor I have on my closed bow boat.

Where is a good place to mount my trolling motor on my boat?
Q. I have a 1968 silver line boat with a closed bow and was wondering where the best place to mount an auotpilot trolling motor is? Right now i have a hand operated trolling motor and it is in the way of my 50 hp motor because there is little room. I am looking for others opinions before I decide what I am going to do. Thanks I am tired of controlling it and fish at the same time.

A. you will want the trolling motor placed to fit the e-z steer connector. get a good bracket and if you do your own installation, don't forget to caulk the holes. our friend did and the leaks caused him problems, you don't want. good luck

How do you change a trolling motor plug-in on the boat from 12 volt3post to 24 volt 4 post?
Q. I just purchased a new motorguide trolling motor to replace my old motorguide that was a 12/24 volt. The new one is 24 volt and has 4 post on the plug. I purchased a 4 post female end and now I am unsure how to wire it up so the 4 plug will work. Any suggestions? Ther are 4 wires, two black one red one orange on the boat that go to my 12 volt batteries, which I have 2 of.

Can I hook up a fishfinder and trolling motor to the same battery?
Q. I have a 12' aluminum boat with a trolling motor and would like to use a depthfinder that I just bought. I'm also not quite sure how to connect the terminal end of the depthfinder to the battery. There are split ends with +/- on the cable. I bought "battery charger and testing clamps" and wondering if I those would work. Thanks!
Asked by o0icedawg0o - Sat Apr 11 10:02:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can run them both on one battery but you shouldn't. The manufacturer says not run a depthfinder on the same battery as your trolling motor. Not sure why but it will void your warrenty. As for hooking it up, just connect the + wire to the positive side of the battery (it will be marked with a + also) and the - wire to the negative side. ( it will also be marked with a -)

How do I hook up my motorguide trolling motor?
Q. My buddy gave me a 24-volt motorguide Brute trolling motor out of his old Ranger boat. The motor has a plug that goes into a receptical on the bow. He gave me the receptical and I am trying to figure out how to hook it up ( I forgot to pay attention to how it was connected when we tested it) The plug is a 4-pronged plug and the receptical has 4 screws that connected to the 4 battery leads (2 pos and 2 neg). It is not your typical 24-volt hookup where you connect neg of one battery to the pos of the other. In his boat, the pos and neg of both batteries were connected directly to the plug receptical. The screws on the back of the receptical are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. Any idea how I should connect these? I don't want to blow up the motor… [cont.]

A. Ranger has it's own setup for the 24 TM. there are male and female 12v and 24v, and there are male and female all 24v setups. if you have a straight 24, i'll assume that, + battery 1 to #3 and - battery 1 to #1. then, + battery 2 to #2 and - battery 2 to #4. maybe that will help.

What type of battery should I use for a trolling motor?
Q. I'm not using it to crank a motor, just for lights on my boat and a 34lb thrust trolling motor.
Asked by Brad T - Mon Apr 9 07:53:14 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should use the type called a deep cycle battery. They are built with more lead plates inside them. A deep cycle battery can stand being pulled down to almost nothing and then being successfully taking a full charge. They will cost a little more money than a regular battery but they will last a lot longer. Be sure you have a battery charger to bring it back up to peak voltage after a fishing trip.

What will happen if I switch the positive and negative wires on my trolling motor?
Q. I just added an extension wire between my trolling motor and the battery. Will the motor turn backwards or not work at all if the negative and positive wires got crossed? Thanks in advance! The motor is a Minnkota 36 pound thrust with forward and reverse. The battery is just a normal deep cell 12 volt battery. Hope these extra details help with your answers.

A. Doesn't matter what kind or size the trolling motor is. It runs on a series circuit it will run backwards, you will have a really fast reverse and a slower forward control movement. Good Luck!!!

A. Gel type batteries will have the best power to weight ratio, and can be brutally cycled. They are best used for continuous low/mid level discharge rates, the lower the rate the higher the capacity of the battery - industry standard traction batteries are all gel type. (wheelchairs, scissor lifts etc.) AGM type are the next best, but are generally more expensive. They handle extreme abuse and can be discharged/charged at very high rates. Deep cycle wet batteries are heavy built, with very thick plates to allow safe discharge as low as 50% - although few manufacturers would encourage this due to the much reduced life span. Starter type wet batteries - as used in a car are built to deliver very high current for a very short time when… [cont.]

How long will a marine battery run a trolling motor.?
Q. I just bought a trolling motor and was wondering how lon would a marine battery keep a charge if using a trolling motor?
Asked by Andrew L - Sun Apr 26 23:09:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most 12-volt trolling motors are rated for a 40-amp circuit breaker (some call for a 50). That's peak current draw. Figure average steady-state to be about half that, 20 to 25 amps. At that rate, you'll drain a 115-amp-hour battery to 50% in about 2 hours of continous use. That's about 2/3 to 3/4 of what you'd get if you drained it at 5 amps. You'll get more run time using it sparingly. If your motor is "adjustable speed" (3, 4 or 5 discrete speed settings), you won't see much power savings by operating it at less than full power. If it's "variable speed", your power consumption will be proportional to the speed setting (e.g., battery lasts twice as long at half speed). Get yourself a good quality charger with a 10- or 12-amp… [cont.]

What size deep cycle battery do i need to run a 54lb 12v Trolling motor ?
Q. The trolling motor has a 48 amp draw. I usually run it half speed for two days . I currently have a pull start 25hp Tohatsu outboard with a output loom (80 watt/6.7 amp) . Should I join up the deep cycle battery to the loom ? I have read that deep cycle battery's should be used to 50% capacity before charging . Is this true ? Thanks for looking Mick
Asked by Michael . - Sun Sep 7 10:37:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Any size deep cycle battery will work. Group 27 is the smallest size I would use. Group 29 will give you longer running time but is heavier. If you don't need to remove the battery from the boat to charge it, go with G 29 or even G 31. Don't bother hooking to engine, you will have to eventually charge the batteries manually anyhow. I always charged my batteries after each use and always got 3-4 years life.

Can you adjust the shaft up and down on a Minn Kota Edge bow mount trolling motor?
Q. Can you adjust the shaft up and down on a minn kota edge bow mount trolling motor? I see there are several different shaft sizes from 36" on up.. Wouldnt the shorter shaft be better so that it wouldnt hang up or catch on anything in the water?
Asked by commosmart1 - Thu May 21 08:54:31 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are two models of the motor. One is a foot control and the other is the hand control. Both of them can be adjusted up or down to suit you best. The reason to get the shorter shaft is to use it on the smaller boats, not the larger 17 feet and better bass boats. Even though you may put the longer shafts on the smaller boats, the top would stick up so high it would interfere with your fishing and casting. For instance I have a 16 aluminum bass boat and use the 36 inch shaft on my trolling motor. This gives me the ability to troll in very shallow water without the top of the trolling motor get in the way of my casting. The 36 inch shaft works perfectly for me on that particular boat. But even with the short 36 inch shaft I sometimes… [cont.]

How long will my trolling motor last on a brand new deep cycle marine battery ?
Q. This is a small trolling motor, and a brand new battery rated for 65 Amp hours. How do I figure out how long it will last ? I need to know for a camping trip i'm going on this weekend. I can take two batteries, but weight could be an issue in a 10' John boat.
Asked by stevetcolbert - Thu Aug 7 16:04:33 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Motorguide rates its 12V motors at about 48amps peak draw. Steady state I'm thinking you use about half that, so you're looking at around 2 hours of continuous use until your battery is 80 percent discharged. My last campout was 3 days/2 nights, using a 12V MG 46lb thrust, 100 amp-hour battery, not too windy, fished 1 night, every morning & evening (mid-day way too hot). When I got home the battery was about 65percent discharged. I was purposely going easy on the trolling motor though.

A. On most trolling motors the tube is threaded into the motor housing I believe that this is what you are calling the lower unit you will need a vise a pipe wrench and muscle but the shaft just unscrews. There may be a roll pin going through it, you will need to remove this pin.Apply heat to the housing where the shaft screws in before you try to unscrew it, more than likely there is locktite on the threads.
