how can I find a collector of old trolling motors?
Q. I have a lejay electrol tolling motor, as far as I can find it is from just after WWII, I searched Ebay and all I could find is a very old add from the late 40's with my trolling motor in the ad. this thing is cool, everyone who sees it ask me "where'd you get that thing? that's cool"... it is in good working order and has to be collectable, beyond Ebay where would I find a collector, I have no real use for this thing, I think it's cool though and would like to see it go to a collector who might really see a value in it as I have no real use for it.

A. Electric trolling motors have come a long way. With the new style batteries, you can fish for most of a day without loosing power. I'm a big fan and think they are worth every penny (I used to run a trolling plate, this is MUCH better!).

What length of trolling motor shaft should I get for my boat?
Q. I have a 14 foot V-haul aluminum fishing boat. I'm planning to buy a trolling motor for it, but should I get a 36" or 42" shaft? I'm looking at a Minn Kota trolling motor. Possibly a 40 to 55 lb trust model.
Asked by minortj - Mon Apr 14 17:07:30 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would go with the 42" shaft so you have lots of shaft still in the water incase you have to mount it up high.

Can you put a trolling motor on a small sailboat?
Q. I have an 11' super snark and am thinking of adding a little trolling motor. We have a lot of little islands around and I need something to get me out to open water. (Less than half a mile) Is this a good idea, and what kind of motor should I consider?
Asked by JTS - Fri Jul 31 16:58:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In general the motor is more trouble than it's worth. If you have to take it off the back of the boat, in order to get it completely out of the water, drag and sailing balance can be a problem, then what do you do with it. It's underfoot. So, that small of a boat is just best sailed out and back. Good luck!

Where is a good place to mount my trolling motor on my boat?
Q. I have a 1968 silver line boat with a closed bow and was wondering where the best place to mount an auotpilot trolling motor is? Right now i have a hand operated trolling motor and it is in the way of my 50 hp motor because there is little room. I am looking for others opinions before I decide what I am going to do. Thanks I am tired of controlling it and fish at the same time.

A. you will want the trolling motor placed to fit the e-z steer connector. get a good bracket and if you do your own installation, don't forget to caulk the holes. our friend did and the leaks caused him problems, you don't want. good luck

How to build a trolling motor?
Q. I have a 12 foot inflatable river raft. It can handle class 3 rapids and can hold a trolling motor up to 3 hp. was wondering how i might build a trolling motor, maybe from a weed eater or something? any ideas or suggestions welcome!
Asked by Michael - Sat Jun 6 00:10:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. An average trolling motor has 35-40 lbs of thrust. It would take even the most enormous, super duty weed whacker to get possibly close to that. Not to mention the time, materials required and how reliable it would probably turn out. Save the time, hassle and materials and get yourself a cheap $150 Minn Kota. It will serve you much better.

Is it possible to make a tansom mount trolling motor into a bow mount?
Q. I am re-doing some of the items on my small 15' trihull and I would really like to add a trolling motor on the bow. What I am finding is that the bow mount is 3x the price of a rear or transom mount trolling motor. Has anyone created or found a mount that will work and save me some $. With the price of gas, I need to cut some corners somewhere so I can still afford to put the boat in the water, lol.

A. yes you can. take off the head and turn around to the other direction, then take a 1 foot piece of 4 inch or more angle iron and mount on the bow, you will have to sit up front to drive it.

What type of battery should I use for a trolling motor?
Q. I'm not using it to crank a motor, just for lights on my boat and a 34lb thrust trolling motor.
Asked by Brad T - Mon Apr 9 07:53:14 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should use the type called a deep cycle battery. They are built with more lead plates inside them. A deep cycle battery can stand being pulled down to almost nothing and then being successfully taking a full charge. They will cost a little more money than a regular battery but they will last a lot longer. Be sure you have a battery charger to bring it back up to peak voltage after a fishing trip.

How to troubleshoot three pin trolling motor receptacle?
Q. I have a motorguide 24 volt trolling motor and have tried to power it through my bow receptacle. It has a 12/24, 2(12) and charge switch next to the receptacle. The motor has a plug with black, yellow and red leads. When I plug it in the motor won't run in any position. What could be the problem? What battery configuration should be used? What position switch should the motor run? Thanks I have looked at the connections at the batteries and there are four leads. White, red, orange and black. The orange/white are positive/negative on battery #1. Red and black are positive/negative on battery #2. How does this combine into a three prong receptacle at the bow?
Asked by Deucer84 - Mon Sep 24 23:03:45 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. black wire is negative DC (battery) power. Red wire is positive DC power and the yellow is the ground for charging if it is hooked up like mine is. It could also been the 12volt dc side to run your lights and the red and black are 24 volts dc to run your motor. I would say you have a blown fuse if it is not running at all and you know your batteries are good. you can also try wiring up to 24 volts by itself and see what happens. If you hook it up backwards the motor will run in reverse if you select forward and vise versa.

What will happen if I switch the positive and negative wires on my trolling motor?
Q. I just added an extension wire between my trolling motor and the battery. Will the motor turn backwards or not work at all if the negative and positive wires got crossed? Thanks in advance! The motor is a Minnkota 36 pound thrust with forward and reverse. The battery is just a normal deep cell 12 volt battery. Hope these extra details help with your answers.
Asked by Earstealer - Wed Sep 3 22:09:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Doesn't matter what kind or size the trolling motor is. It runs on a series circuit it will run backwards, you will have a really fast reverse and a slower forward control movement. Good Luck!!!

Is a trolling motor enough for a jonboat and lake fishing?
Q. I'm looking to get a 12-14' jonboat. Is it sensible to use a trolling motor for going around a lake for a couple of hours (from spot to spot not constant trolling). How many pounds of thrust should I be looking for?
Asked by Arch Bishop Don Magic Juan - Sun Jan 6 20:58:28 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Many lakes will not allow gas powered motors to be used. I have a 1956 15' Cherokee (heavy V bottom) that I transformed into a fishing boat. I use a 50# trolling motors and carry 2 batteries hooked to solar chargers. ( several electrical items running like fish finder, radio, lights, pumps as well as motor). I go out all night and have no troubles and get around fine even on windy days. My best friend has a 14' Jon and runs a 34# with just 1 solar charger. He carries 2 batteries and has just a few electrics and never had any troubles. I suggest from what information you given (not knowing how much you'll be running on the battery and weight you'll be pushing). Get a 50# thrust motor, carry one spare battery and have a solar charger… [cont.]
