Q. The trust was established in Febr 2002 with 4 members. Bank account opened two years back. No activities performed so far based on the trust. Now we are interested in running the trust actively. How do we go ahead from here like getting government registration, tax exemption, fund raising, etc., Do let us know.

A. You should look into the terms under which the trust was established. If no tax id was issued, then you can apply at the irs website (under charities) - there you will find additional information about other requirements and tax issues. You can't do any fundraising until you have that sorted out. For more information about nonprofit organizations, you can look into the many resources publicly available at the Foundation Center - www.foundationcenter.org
