What is the current hourly rate for a tutor today in the subject of geometry?
Q. I am interested in getting a one on one tutor for my son for his geometry class. Perhaps an Honor student in high school or a college student. My son is in the 9th grade. His current grade in this subject is 77. And I'm hoping for at least a 90. Anyone out there currently has a tutor that they pay?

A. Depends on who you talk to, but I generally charge about $20 an hour and I have known other tutors who charge upwards of $30-$35.

How can I get started as a freelance tutor for kids?

A. You could try advertising in the newspaper, but anyone answering the ad may ask what your qualifications are. Universities and colleges sometimes hire "student peer tutors," but they typically choose them from among the students who are enrolled in the programs and getting the highest marks. If you truly are interested in teaching, why not take courses part-time in the evening or online? Depending on the clientele you are looking for, you can take courses from a teacher's college, or take special education teaching assistant training or adult education instructor training. And since you already have a degree, you may be able to apply to have a "prior learning assessment" at the college or university you choose. In either case, your… [cont.]

How do I become a english tutor in korea?
Q. Ok, first of all, I am an undergraduate college student who knows little to no Korean, but I need to make money because I am planning on getting married and living here too. Any suggestions? Where do i find people to tutor?

A. You can check for jobs on these two sites: daveseslcafe.com pusanweb.com These jobs will be legal and usually for a one-year contract. You said that you're a student now. Most jobs here require a university degree and they are going to want to see the original diploma and transcripts. If you just want to teach people privately and not through a company, those are just obtained by word of mouth. Although you can make much bigger money this way, it is not legal. In my years in Korea, I've never known anyone who has been deported or even fined for teaching privately, but apparently it is possible.

A. Well something like sweets is a bit childish... But when we left year 6, our teacher bought a load of different mugs and things and let us choose which ones we wanted. It's a bit of a hard thing to think of. Maybe you could ask your tutor group about they're opinion on it? But whatever you do get them, I'm sure they would appreciate it :) Good Luck finding something :D

A. I would ask one of the professors if they had a student they would recommend. Most professors will be able to think of one that would be a good tutor, and then you just need to contact them and see if they will tutor you. This is very useful to do, because they will often provide names for people who have taken the class already, so they should be better equiped to help you out.

How much to charge hourly as a Spanish tutor?
Q. I've been asked by a friend if I could tutor her little sister in Spanish. I'm a sophomore (in High School) and her sister is in the 8th grade. I'm in Honors Spanish and understand it pretty well-at least well enough to tutor at that level. So how much should I charge? It's also my first time tutoring.

A. At least around 10 to 13 dollars an hour. It's hard work to tutor it,because if she doesn't understand it at ALL,then she needs a lot of time to work with you and you are commiting a lot of time to her so you should get more compensation.

What is the difference between attending office hours and going to a tutor?
Q. Other than the fact that one is free, and the other is not. That is, why do so many students opt to receive tutoring when office hours are available? Yes, I realize that some professors just suck at explaining/teaching, thus a tutor might be better, or a student cannot find time to make it to office hours due to work or what not, but even taking these situations into account, I believe most students will not take advantage of office hours. Why?

A. Learning a new concept is like blind men trying to visualize an elephant - you have to have many different perspectives before you can form a complete picture. I tell my students that if all they wanted to hear was to have me repeat what I already told them in class - they are welcome to come and see me. Going to a tutor will give them a second perspective - but even that can be woefully inadequate. For a "full color four dimensional" view of a concept I have found that study groups are absolutely the best. The problem at my commuter college is that my students rarely see each other outside of class - and that is a terrible loss for them. Assuming that you are a teacher, and you are asking why more students don't come and see you, my… [cont.]

A. Hiring a private tutor for one-on-one tutoring is the best way to go. However, if money is an issue, you can opt for online tutoring instead. Try some online tutoring services like: 1) - tutoring by retired teachers and volunteers (free) 2) - tutoring by professional tutors (not free) 3) ... and many more (use search engine). Think ouside the box and you'll have more options! Good luck!

How hard is it to create a clientele in being a home schooling tutor?
Q. I'm pushing 60, and the various things I am able to do narrow down a bit, but I can still love kids and seeing them light up when they learn something that matters to them. I am, to be blunt, itching to tutor home-schooled kids. How hard is that to set up? How do I establish my credentials? Maybe do some book reading or volunteering at the local library? Come on, home schooling parents, give me your best here. I'll be in St. Louis, Missouri, if that's relevant. Cris, I'm not either a mother or a grandmother, which is much of why I want to work with other people's kids. There are a lot of good ideas here. I think I'll extend the deadline.

A. tough one. That is awesome that you have a heart to help children, but working with homeschool families may prove to be too narrow to be successful. If you are, or have been a homeschool parent, that should help you establish a connection, but it sounds like your moving? If you're new, it will be difficult. If you are not a homeschool parent, are you a certified teacher? That would give you an opportunity to work with the local school district. I know the schools are always needing a list of names of people that are willing to tutor, but again, you would have to be certified (even retired is ok) and you would have to basically be an employee, submitting to background checks and so forth. If neither of those describe you, then connect with… [cont.]

How effective is it to get students to tutor by posting ads at colleges?
Q. I was hoping to private tutor students for some extra money and I was wondering if this is an effective way to find students or not so much anymore?
Asked by Robert - Mon Jul 6 01:01:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the school. If it has its own free tutoring service, then the posted ads mostly get ignored. If not, and if there isn't any kind of officially sanctioned system, then it might work.
