How does a utility company benefit from reducing energy consumption?
Q. Utility Companies make money from selling energy, but it seems they are always trying to reduce people's energy consumption. How does a Utility company benefit from selling LESS energy? All I can think of is that it wants to reduce capacity, but I dont know why. Help me out.
Asked by Preston S - Thu Sep 6 16:39:43 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually, they don't want to reduce total energy consumed. They want to avoid peak power demand spikes, which overload their systems and cause breakers to pop or equipment to burn out. So, they tell people to do their laundry at night, since during the hot day, air conditioners are using up a lot of the juice. If they can even out the demand, it helps them, so they don't have to invest in more capacity to handle extreme peak power.

A. Mostly power companies are concerned with overgrowth and encroachment of high-voltage lines by vegetation. CATV and telephone providers usually just rent space on the poles from the owner who is usually the power company. Unless there is reason to (like new system upgrades, necessary repairs, etc.) cable and phone guys won't want to help you trim your trees. Often these systems can endure substantial overgrowth without any interruption of service. However when trees and vegetation make physical contact with energized power lines they become conductive and an unwanted part of the electric company's distribution grid. Nobody wants this, and your local electricity company is the ally you're looking for. They often work a tree trimming crew… [cont.]

What problems are utility companies having to face today in providing energy for more people?
Q. What problems are utility companies having to face today in providing energy for more people? It could be any kind of problems. And are there alternative energy sources that companies can use?
Asked by hihi - Mon Apr 14 17:31:05 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The first and foremost problem is the red tape put in place to making it near impossible to get any thing done. Then when you get the paper work out of the way, then all the well meaning greenies protest it and halt any progress. Then when some hot shot gets out there and say this is the way to go, people jump on the band wagon with out the slightest knowledge if this source of energy is even plausible or cost effective. To answer your last question there are good alt. sources but they will not be used due to trumped-up environmental regulations.

How do you replace a utility light?
Q. I have one of those utility lights on my property and it just burnt out. How do I replace it.
Asked by redhed28 - Fri Jun 8 21:49:32 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If my presumption/guess is that you're talking about a street light that the local Elecrtrical Power company normally places along streets, then there normally is a metal tag on the pole that identifies each utility pole... write this number down and look up the telephone number of your utility company, and you simply call it in and report it out so many days. They will send a crew out to change/replace it...if they don't fix the problem in 7-10 days, call again and remind them you called in to report it earlier. Normally you only need to call them once, but different localities have different priorities. Hope the info helps!

How can I make comparisons between ELECTRIC utility COMPANIES?
Q. This is something I've wanted to do for some time, especially now that I'm planning on moving out of South Florida: Is there any website that will show me comparisons in kilowatt usage, utility taxes_and whatever else these companies mount on top of the already high electric bill? Of course, with the regular charge amount. Better yet would be a website which will show me if not actual electric bills, at least a demonstration, step by step. Is there such a website?

How much is your utility bill?
Q. I'm looking at renting a home of around 2500 square feet in Dallas, Texas. I have absolutely no clue what utilities would cost and cannot get a hold of the utility company to get an estimate. Could you guys please post your location, current utility bill( all utilities. gas, electric, water, etc.) and house size? This would help me in creating a rough estimate.
Asked by nthomas76207 - Thu Jun 12 22:02:43 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I lived in Austin, Texas, for years, and you can probably expect your electric bill to be over $200 and perhaps as much as $300. It really depends on the age of the house and the air conditioner, if there are ceiling fans, and at what temp you are willing to set the thermostat, and whether the thermostat is programmable. I moved to a small town in Oregon, on the coast, to get away from the heat and humidity in Texas. Where I live now, if the summer temp gets over 80, everybody complains about the heat!!!

Can a water utility company legally cut your water off if you're 6 days late paying the bill?
Q. This water utility company that we just got made a change to their policy that states if you don't have the bill in by 5 days after the due date, they will cut water off by 10:00 AM the next morning. Then they'll charge $100 fee to reconnect service.
Asked by Jay S - Sun Jan 18 10:20:05 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, and they will, too. I missed paying a water bill due to being out of town for a funeral. The bastards had a cut-off time of noon on the day I returned. I got home at about 12:30 PM, had no water, called them, thinking they were doing a repair, and they said, "Well you should have paid the bill." Even when I explained I had lost a family member and had been out of town for over a week, they refused to waive the re-connect fee...I guess people lie to them all the time, and they either didn't believe me or just didn't care... My fantasy is to go in one day with a bucket of pennies and pay the bill about 10 minutes before they close on a Friday! (What can I say, I can be childish at times!)

Is an electrical utility box dangerous to your health?
Q. There's an electrical utility box outside my house. I want to know if it may be dangerous to your health in any way, not including the risk in which you may be shocked if in close contact to the box. Thanks.
Asked by Yudong C - Fri Apr 10 00:49:58 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In no way will this box hurt you (besides possible shock). Your cell phone and wireless internet connection will hurt you more than anything else. Power (utilities) transmission operates at 50/60 Hz depending on where you live. This is very low frequency, and generally only a small amount of electromagnetic radiation is produced. For perspective, the North Pole has more magnetizing force than a typical transmission line. On the other hand, cell phones and wireless internet operate between 1 and 2.5 GHz (25000 Hz). This is high frequency, and radiation is produced in all directions including into your head. An example of this is if you feel like your face is warm well after getting off the cell phone. That is due to electromagnetic… [cont.]

Asked by ryan moorefield - Fri Jun 12 00:27:54 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would advise you against going with a pure utility 4-wheeler. The suspension and the ride is simply too jolting for a hard day of scouting and hunting on one. I have uses ATV's since the honda 110 three wheeler hit the market and haven't been without one since. They are one of life's greatest gifts to the hunter. Here is my advice- don't get one unless it is the exact one you want. It may cost a little more, but the improved ride and features they have will be more then worth it.I think the best value on the market right now is the Honda Foreman. The ride is almost as good as the sport ATV's And you have push button 4 wheel drive and it is available for $5300 in this area.

What are the average utility bills for the city of Warren, OH?
Q. Am buying a home there and would love to know what the average utility bills for that SE location in Warren, OH would be.
Asked by Paul H - Sun Mar 30 14:03:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It would obviously depend on the residence and the usage, but overally, the utilities are affordable in Warren, Ohio. If you're trying to budget, I would estimate that a 500 sq ft apartment would be about $150-200/month and a 2,000 sq ft house would be about $300/month. Those are just rough estimates though for heating, cooling, water, and sewer. It will be very dependend on the insulation of the residence, the efficiency of appliances, and the temperature the thermostat is set for.

How do you open a utility knife?
Q. I need to cut up boxes for recycling. I bought a utility knife w/ 2 blades included, but I don't know how to get it started. There are no directions on it, just a piece of cardboard sticking up out of where the blade should be that tells you to wear safety glasses and be careful, (which I can't pull out). There's a little knob that slides up and down that I thought would slip the blade up, but nothing happens when I do that. There's a big screw in the handle, do I need to undo the screw? (I thought it may have been broke, so I went back to the store and looked at the others, and they're all the same way--there was no one in the Department to ask).
Asked by Bonbon29 - Sun Sep 2 07:38:48 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take the screw out and the knife will separate into two halves. Take one of the new blades, after removing the piece of cardboard, and put it on the slider so that the two cutouts on the top of the blade are lined up with the tabs on the slider. Pay careful attention when you separate the two halves and put the knife back together the same way.. Replace the screw, and push down on the slider while pushing fore ward at thee same time. You should be ready to cut boxes. Keep in mind that paper dulls the blade fast . when the blade is dull open the knife and turn the blade around th use the other side. One blade will give you two uses. I hope this helps. If not go to your local Ace Hardware or Home Depot and ask someone there. They will be… [cont.]
