Waldorf schools, are they racist? Rudolf Steiner was...?
Q. I am attending a Waldorf course right now and read on the Internet that Steiner was racist...I am shocked and don t know what to do,the schools might not act upon all of Steiner s ideas, but I strongly dislike the idea of the founder being a racist...what can I ask them to find out more without being offensive?

A. Hold on. You need to consider your history before you can attribute racism as an individual attribute. The late 1800 in Germany was a period when the ideas of Social Darwinism flourished. The notion of a better suited, more intelligent, ideal type of people was not new. In fact the idea was thought highly scientific by men of reason. It was not deemed racism but science. These ideas/beliefs are evident in Goethe's work, Nietzsche, and Wagner's music. Such beliefs were the basis for the growth of nationalism and militarism prior to WWI and again prior to WWII. These theories have since fallen out of favor and are seen today in a different light. Therefore, Steiner can then be considered a man knowledgeable of the scientific beliefs… [cont.]

Calgary Waldorf School for Kindergarten- What do you think of it?
Q. We are thinking of putting our son into Calgary Waldorf school for junior Kindergarten. He will be 5 year Sept. I have been doing some research on it and it seems pretty good but I am still a little skeptical. Not sure about the idea of delaying his ability to read for so long. If there are any parents out there that have children in the school can you please let me know what your experience has been like, good or bad? Thanks.

A. I attended a Waldorf school up until the third grade and then my parents forced me(which they son regretted) to go back in high school. When I left the school after 3rd grade due to financial problems I had to go to a public school. I was 3 years behind in almost every subject, not just reading. It took me years to catch up and teach myself how to read. When I went back in high school I had the most awful experience of my life. Regardless of what I was and was not learning, there were a number of incidents that occurred that were both illegal and horrifying for a child to go through. My mom was so disgusted with all of it so she began to do some research. She found numerous websites with people who also had awful experiences from all… [cont.]

Q. Why do teachers in Waldorf schools have to wear skirts?
Asked by Alison C - Mon Apr 13 11:48:53 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most Waldorf schools have dress codes that ban the wearing of advertising, logos, writing or media-inspired characters. There are many reasons for this, but the one they state most often is "The school is a retreat from the sensory bombardment of advertising" and "such things are markers of groups and cliques." Waldorf education believes in being natural. They feel that it is better for the Earth and for people's health. Keeping in line with this they prefer that their students and staff wear natural fibers, preferably dyed with natural dyes and grown organically. Notice I wrote" prefer", most schools do not make this mandatory. Teachers are role models for their students. Therefore they are usually held to the same standards as their… [cont.]

A. Initially, when people hear about or see a Waldorf school, they are really intrigued. The schools are so beautiful, and the art, music, and movement classes are so appealing that people consider enrolling their children right away. But as time goes on, and people are exposed to the true intricacies of their philosophy, some begin to reconsider. They start to have problems with the lack of academics in the early years, as well as their fear of anything "non-Waldorf". Most schools not only do not teach children reading or writing until third grade, but ask their families to refrain from having the written word out in their house until all children living there are past third grade. More so they often ask families not to attend museums,… [cont.]

They could never think of doing anything else. I on the other hand, see some good things in their philosophy and am glad to have had the experiences I had in them, but would never work in one again. I think there are absolutely wonderful things in Waldorf education. I love the way they teach academic concepts with art and music and wish I could learn more about teaching this way, but do not agree with the philosophy as a whole. A. Learning is interdisciplinary, integrates practical, artistic, and intellectual elements, and is coordinated with "natural rhythms of everyday life". It is more of a private school than a prep school. The philosophy does not support uniforms. The students may reflect a slight "natural" or semi-hippie style. Whether you find that cute or not is a personal preference.
