A. WW2 was a massive psychological blow to Russia, they had been invaded and nearly destroyed millions of their people were dead and millions more homeless. Stalin was terrified of another invasion coming out of the West, he looked at all these Capitalist countries lined up and thought of them as natural Enemies of Communism, in his suspicious paranoid mind, he expected the US to invade them to destroy communism and himself. (plus America had the Bomb at this time the USSR didn't) As such he wanted to create a buffer zone between Russian soil and Nato, to do this he needed Eastern Europe, he had already conquered these places from the Germans and installed puppet Governments answerable to him.
