What is the difference between California and Washington state?
Q. Not like, geographically, but more like law. Like whats different in Washington that's better or worse that's legal or illegal? I'm Moving From California to Washington State, and I would love to know what the laws are on age, and how old you have to be to buy certain things maybe that you cant buy in California, such as maybe, potassium nitrate, or even steel wool, or anything that I might need from a hardware store, but obviously, please don't say anything federal, because those laws apply to the whole country, not just one state.

Should the Washington Nationals try to celebrate Walter Johnson's career, as a way to bring attention to team?
Q. Just an idea. They're not having that good of a season. Johnson did play for the Washington team, and retired to live in Maryland. Widely considered one of the top 5 best baseball pitchers ever, and was First Ballot for Hall of Fame. On the other hand, he's been dead for about 60 years.

A. seems to me a ceremony would come off as a bit random. Maybe a bobblehead day or something for him. Giveaways usually fill the stands pretty well. More popular teams use giveaways on holidays and other occasions where the stands will likely be mostly empty. So maybe having a Walter Johnson day or something would be cool.

How does the story of Cincinattus compare to George Washington?
Q. How does the story of Cincinattus compare with George Washington wanting to return to Mount Vernon at the end of the Revolution?
Asked by Angel Y - Tue Jul 7 16:10:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Cincinnatus had been consul of Rome but had retired from politics and lived as a farmer on a plot of land he owned. When the Aequians threatened Rome and entrapped the city's defense forces, the leaders of Rome came to Cincinnatus and offered him the fasces - a symbolic way of asking him to serve as dictator during the crisis. Cincinnatus organized a army of boys and old men, surprised the enemy, and saved Rome from certain destruction. After the crisis passed, Cincinnatus returned the fasces to the city's political leaders, not wishing to seize the opportunity to make himself a king. In the post-Revolutionary War period, many people fancied George Washington as a modern-day Cincinnatus - someone who led his people through a time of… [cont.]

What are the tax implications of living in Washington State and working in Idaho?

I know that I will have to pay Idaho income tax regardless of my location, but am wondering if Washington will charge me anything. How is it that California and Oregon have a 9%+ income tax and Washington has no income tax?
Q. I live in San Francisco and pay California's (in my opinion) outrageous 9.3% tax rate. In looking around I notice that Oregon has a 9% top rate while Nevada and Washington have no income tax. I know that Oregon has no sales tax, so that sort of explains things there. But can someone explain for me the basics of why California appears to be so much more expensive than Nevada and Washington? Is there some way as a California resident I can take advantage of something to avoid paying what appears to be thousands of dollars more than I would pay if I moved to Seattle? Alternately, is there some tax that they pay in Washington that I'm not considering? Finally, is it just that the California government is stupid and inefficient, or are they… [cont.]

A. Most of the difference has to do with Prop 13's effect on California. While anyone who purchases a home pays taxes on the current value of the property, someone who has lived in the same home for years is locked in at a much lower rate. For example, know of someone who purchased home in 1976 for $42,000. Property taxes are less that $250 a year. My property in Oregon is on the tax roles at $85000 and I pay $1300 a year. Like Cali, my tax increase every year at a minimum rate, but in Washingotn that's not the case. That said, yes, you can save tax dollars in Washington or Oregon over Cali. But you don't have the weather, job oppertunities, entertainment or sports activities that large numbers of people generate. For me, none of the… [cont.]

What is the distance from Anacortes, Washington to Portland Oregon?
Q. We are planning a trip to Portland Oregon and we were wondering how far would it be to drive from Anacortes Washington to Portland. We live on Vancouver Island and would Also like to know the distance between Anacortes and Portland. Thanks for your help.
Asked by ~Katie~ - Mon Apr 13 22:44:23 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Going from Anacortes Washington to Portland Oregon is about 253 miles (approx) and will take you about 4 1/2 hours depending on weather and traffic. The most direct route is going from WA-20 to Interstate 5, that will take you straight into Portland. Be advised there is some road construction on several places on I-5, and traffic at Rush Hour (morning and afternoon) in Seattle, Tacoma and Portland can get pretty bad so plan accordingly. Have a safe and fun trip!!

Can I grow a lemon tree in Washington State?
Q. I live near the coast in Washington State and we have fairly rainy and cold winters with decent summers (aside from this year). It does freeze in the winter quite a bit, Are these too harsh of conditions to grow a lemon tree outside?
Asked by saranwrapher - Thu Jun 19 23:48:54 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure, you can. In the house. I can't think of anywhere in Washington state that a lemon can be grown outdoors successfully year-round in the open weather. I know I am going to get all kinds of flak from you folks who live on Lake Washington in Kirkland or Bellevue, but if you are honest, you are giving that lemon tree a helping hand in the winter time. It ain't happenin', and I'm not buying it. But do grow one in your sunniest window, they are attractive and simple houseplants.

How hard is it to pass the Washington State Motorcycle drivers test?
Q. I'm considering purchasing a 750 Honda Shadow Spirit. Is this too big of a bike for the Washington State m/c drivers test? I understand that smaller bikes make passing the driver's part of the test easier. Years ago, I had a 750 (CB) and an 1100 (GL) before, and I'm an experienced rider, but not an expert by any means and thinking about the test makes me anxious.
Asked by Lizard King - Wed Nov 5 14:29:43 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Many facilities that provide motorcycle driver tests have the test course permanently set-up somewhere on the grounds. Locate a site with the course laid out and find out what days they don't test on. More often then not, the facility will allow you to practice on the course when it's not in use. Find a licensed person to go there with you; to keep things legal.

What do I need in order to take my dog to Canada from Washington?
Q. I'm planning a trip to Canada from Washington state and I want to make sure I won't have troubles crossing the boarder into Canada and then back into Washington. I'm going by car. A. I would carry the shots records from the vet, his registration papers showing you as the owner, a clean checkup report from the vet. The vet should be able to tell you. Good luck. I know someone who had a bad experience going to Canada from Washington state. Nothing to do with the dogs, but it was a mess. Her friend was traveling with her and the fried had a dog along. They never even questioned the one with the dog, just let her go thru.

How was George Washington's advice taken in all of the different areas?
Q. In George Washington's farewell Address, George Washington warned the new nation against political parties, sectionalism, and involvement in European rivalries. What I'm trying to figure out is how well his advice was taken in each area.
Asked by Brady. - Tue Dec 16 20:39:14 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. WOW!! I'm just read an exert from it and i had to answer some questions about it. Washington definitely warned us about the 'spirit of parties' but I don't think it was actually listened to. Americans listened more closely to his advice on foreign policy when he said to remain neutral. Alexander Hamilton wanted to stay out of Europe's affairs, but Thomas Jefferson thought America should help with the French Revolution (Here we see that the parties split. Federalists vs. Democratic Republicans.)

A. Google maps is the best for learning the surrounding areas, though from DC to Manhattan, you will get on 95 and follow signs. it's a very easy drive to navigate. The NJ turnpike and New York bridge/tunnels will rob you blind. If you have EZ pass, you'll save some time waiting in toll lines. With no traffic, it should take about 3 hours to Philadelphia, and another 1.5 hours to NYC. 95 is also a major truck route, and around this time of year, there is a lot of construction around major cities.

A. I believe so. There are, however, significant pressures on the president-elect to decline his 400k salary. This is because he has said that living in excess is greed, together with the fact that he said he would go line-by-line to eliminate unnecessary spending. You can run a Google search on this and you can really learn some things about Presidential salary history. It's pretty intriguing. Also, to note, Gov. Romney said during the primaries that if he were to become President, he would not take a salary. You could also equate Washington to Mayor Bloomberg, who I also believe, does not take a salary from the City of NY

A. Washington as a young Lt. Col. was sent by the Governor of Virginia into the Ohio River Valley (in direct conflict with the governing English authority) to set up a camp along the Mississippi River. Washington and his men came upon a French Fort and over took it. This is the root cause of the French and Indian/Seven Year's War. By the end of the war, the French had been defeated on two continents, but still they hung on in North America. Within ten years, the Americans would declare war on the English and make friends with the French. The French were never much interested in settling the land. Their interests were in pelts and fish.
